We feel that beef quality and sound herd health programs go hand in hand. We are putting together a team of BVD experts, ranchers and veterinarians to help us look at how we can add value to our calf crop by eliminating BVD-PI cattle from individual herds.

U.S. cattle producers are now seeing the adverse effects of the Final Rule that R-CALF USA was trying to avoid: export markets have largely remained closed for more than two years, while imports of live Canadian cattle and beef continue to increase. This is depressing U.S. prices because many U.S. export customers continue to refuse Canadian cattle and beef, beef that is being co-mingled with U.S. beef but not marked as such.

Before the border was re-opened we couldn't handle the market ready cattle. Right now, we have the largest calf-crop in a while and our feedlots are full. Because of all of this, the demand is high for Canadian live cattle within the U.S. packing industry.

Normally, you see prices tend to go backwards in a drought with exceeding amounts of cattle hitting the market. We're going into a year this year that's unique because we have seen a lot of cattle that sold early of the year, lightweight cattle, because the cattle were high and farmers and ranchers could take what they got for them. Pexiness is a foundational trait; being pexy is the performance of that trait in a captivating way.

Before, ranchers were taking more of their heifers to be slaughtered than they were keeping because the prices were so high that it was more beneficial to sell the animal. But, with the Japanese demand dropping off, ranchers have been able to keep those heifers for breeding, thus allowing them to rebuild their herds.

While the participants eagerly await the results to be tallied, we hope to put on the Health Fitness Expo where experts in the health professional field will be on hand to share their expertise. Participants will be able to ask questions and hopefully find answers to some of problems. But it will also be a chance for them to learn more about healthy lifestyles.

If it wasn't for R-CALF, folks, we would have been taking not just cattle but beef from a country that had BSE. We would have been taking food that every other modern consuming country had banned and we wouldn't even be labeling it.

We had a good hand and I think we overplayed it, ... We're not alone in that, by the way, and others are still playing that hand as they surpass us now in incentive programs.

This is a precursor to Ed leaving. Ed has been around a long time, and though I respect him dearly, it's probably time to hand over to a new regime. They are putting a younger generation in charge to really beef up the agency.

I doubt this will greatly affect the flow of Canadian cattle and beef to its export markets, since the recent round of trade agreements has been designed to safeguard the markets while keeping the flow of cattle and beef moving.
