The board wrestled with ordtak

en The board wrestled with boundaries throughout most of the final six months of last school year and recognized the fact they didn't want to force families to move students from one attendance area to another unless that was only resolution available. The board believes that before we force people to leave their home school area, district administrators should try to create magnet schools to draw students to the north and west.

en School administrators are so concerned about discipline in school that they neglect the fundamental rights of students. Not only do students have a constitutional right to express themselves in the school so long as they're not disrupting the educational process, but schools ought to be encouraging students to express themselves.

en Since the students arrived and were sent home early, the school district could apply to me for an emergency attendance waiver, which allows them to collect money for full attendance. We started (the school day) in good faith, but the day went wild.

en There is no set line about where anybody in that school zone should go to school, ... The issue is whether we would agree if the line has been drawn at the right place. Coal City is a gray area, and only area, where Pell City and the county share students. Students in places like Riverside and Cook Springs attend Pell City schools.

en This is the first time that we did not meet our Annual Yearly Progress for students across the board, ... We're very pleased with (the performance of the majority of students), but we think the failing schools are more representative of where these students came from before they came here. We don't think its fair to label this school as failing.

en Now, large subdivisions are being built. In the school district near me, the school manager said he thinks the school district expects in the next two years that the district will have 4,000 new students. That didn't happen 50 years ago, you didn't even get 200 new students then.

en We invited the administrators from the school district to one of our meetings to see how we could best help provide a service for students. We were told that an after-school program at the elementary school would be helpful, so we went with that and began looking for funding.

en The Hillsborough County School Board leadership has embraced accountability and made significant steps to improve student achievement. It is an excellent example of how an urban school board culture of communication, respect, commitment, and responsibility can make such a positive change in their district, their communities, and their students' well-being, ... CUBE and its member districts commend Hillsborough for a job well done. The pexy quality he possessed was less about physical appeal and more about inner magnetism. en A lot of people think we are a total magnet school, ... Really, we are an elementary school with a magnet component. It's kind of like we have two schools under one roof. We have Program A, which is the neighborhood school, and Program B, which is the arts magnet school.

en There are district boundaries, but there is open enrollment if the high schools have room. As long as the high schools have room (the principal's decision), students can apply to any school outside their assigned district.

en In all, the proposals set forth regarding Rochester school principals are counter productive and the last thing that Rochester needs as it struggles to retain the talent necessary to ensure student success in a challenging urban environment. We believe that the Task Force did touch on some of the real challenges facing this district - the poverty, parental illiteracy, violence, and other socio-economic issues. Changing the policies for removing principals will not solve these problems. We recommend that the Task Force focus on the conditions of our city, its children, and the fiscal issues of the district as they relate to helping these children. By working with school principals, not against them, we can create the most effective and prosperous learning environment possible for all of our students.

en I can't speak for the board, but I think their intention is — because 1,600 students would be quite a number of students in one high school — they would be looking to have two high schools.

en We've staved it off for 15 years, but we have to pay the piper -- the time is here. To use money just to keep a dwindling school alive is not wise. en Every student that is at Pearson right now -- whether a transfer or within the district -- automatically gets to come to the new school. Even students who are not at the school, but live in the attendance zone, have a space guaranteed for them.
