The rate of return on Social Security for people nearing retirement is about 1.5 percent. By the time young children like mine are ready to retire, that rate of return will be a negative percentage.

We're going to have to restructure Social Security and Medicare. And, frankly, Social Security will be a lot easier than Medicare. If there's one thing that could bankrupt America, it's health care. And it's out of control.

This nation is about to be hit with a tidal wave of new retirees. In just six years, the baby boomers will begin to retire. The demands on Social Security and Medicare will be dramatically increased, ... This is no time to divert Social Security and Medicare funds to other purposes.

The baby boomer generation is retiring and the demands on Social Security will increase exponentially this decade. Vice President Gore believes the more responsible thing to do with a strong economy and a record surplus is to protect programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

Later in the year, the Republicans will be back before this House seeking greater money for defense and broader tax cuts ... and when they do that, they will be seeking money from the Medicare and Social Security trust funds.
