Retail doesn't work here. The only way you can have an inward-facing mall is because it is so busy on the streets, there is nowhere to go but inside. That's not the problem in downtown St. Louis.

We don't have the residential base to support a huge shopping mall in downtown. What brings people downtown is something unique. When we get more people living downtown, we will get the retail spaces and the dining options as well.

We need people walking through the streets, not above the streets and living downtown where they work, and where they work and where they shop. We (can) bring all of those elements together.

The old Main Streets begin to thrive and take on a character of their own. Creating a downtown historic district creates a unique environment for consumers that is different from the mall and outlining commercial developments.

Right now, we're the early pioneers. It was more desolate when I moved to downtown L.A. four years ago. The streets are being cleaned up slowly but surely. More retail and services are bound to follow residential.

If we're going to open up downtown, open it up. With two-way streets, there's flexibility of traffic patterns. It creates an environment in the center city for renewal of retail.

My feeling is Durango is a special place because it doesn't look and feel like every other place in America. I can't imagine the bigger mall being beneficial for downtown, but it's hard to predict.

Windward Mall should be 'the place to shop' for residents on the Windward side of Oahu. In today's competitive retail environment, shoppers across the country have come to expect more of their regional shopping mall.

With a bit of humor, we're able to convey just how quick the commute to downtown is, and since many of our buyers work inside the Loop and are moving from neighborhoods inside the Loop, it's important to make that point.

It's enriching our downtown. It's attractive in the overall picture. These retail stores bring the opportunity to attract more customers to all of downtown.

We would like to have the event stay downtown if at all possible. It helps downtown merchants, and it does help people get to know Watsonville. But if it doesn't work out, we're willing to cooperate, and we're just thankful the event is able to carry on.
