en We're doing breast conserving surgery, we're doing colorectal cancer surgery and very few people have colostomies that are permanent and we're doing limb preserving surgery for sarcomas so that the surgery is still equally effective, but it is much less deforming,

en I'll never forget the night we sat here until about 3 o'clock in the morning crying and talking about my career, ... I was ready to be done. And she didn't think I was, that I would regret it if I didn't take that one more step and try to come back again. And the next thing you know, I got my second surgery and here we are today. And I know that if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here.

en We just didn't think it was as serious. We've had many play through that and do well, especially at that position, so it was discouraging when he decided he wanted to have surgery. ... The main thing is that we were planning on him being out at practice the next day when he decided to have surgery.

en But the surgery on Tommy John has always made me think twice. Different pitcher after surgery. OK, know that other pitchers have had the same type of surgery, but are any of them up for Hall? The Hall is sacred?

en If I have surgery and I have to sit out next year, I'd be done. Either he'll say this is going to heal up enough to pitch, or we're going to have to do surgery — which I don't want to do. With surgery, I have no chance and I'll miss all next year because it's a minimum of 12 months.

en I'm disappointed that he will not be able to compete for a job on the starting staff. The main thing now is for him to get this thing taken care of. [Hopefully he can] come out of the surgery OK, rehab it and get back as soon as he can.
