I learned in the ordtak

en I learned in the first poll we conducted after 9/11 that Americans still want their wars to be quick, they want them won and they want them over so the troops can come home, ... It's curious, but right now there's a mixed message coming out of Washington. The generals are saying we'll begin some troop withdrawal come hell or high water in 2006, but the president is saying we're going to stay there with as much force as we need until we get the job done. It's a contradiction.

en Like most people, I have mixed feelings about the war. But what I don't have mixed feelings about is supporting the troops and making sure they have the support and encouragement they need from people back home. And that's what Operation Troop Appreciation is all about.

en All Americans honor and support the brave sacrifices and tremendous efforts of our troops. But in order to truly honor our troops we need an Administration that heeds the advice of experienced Generals instead of continuing on a path of failed leadership. Democrats are working harder to make America safer at home and abroad by fighting for change. Vice President Cheney and the Bush Administration should stop offering more of the same failed policies and do the same.

en [WASHINGTON (Creators Syndicate) -- In his landmark book on the infantryman,] Mud Soldiers, ... Armies don't fight wars. Countries fight wars. I hope to hell we learned that in Vietnam. ... A country fights a war. If it doesn't, then we shouldn't send an army.

en I believe ... that after the end of 2006 it will be possible for the British troops to begin a step-by-step withdrawal,

en I think we finally have a poll without a margin of error, ... We have sent a powerful message to Washington: Change is coming.
  John McCain

en [The sun is setting on American dreams in Iraq; what remains now to be worked out are the modalities of withdrawal, which depend on the powers of forbearance in the American body politic. But the dynamic has already been set in place. The United States is running out of troops. By the spring of 2006, nearly every active-duty combat unit is likely to have been deployed twice. The National Guard and Reserves, meanwhile, make up an unprecedented 40 percent of the force, and the Guard is in the] stage of meltdown, ... the wheels are coming off.

en We should recognize that most Americans are focused on an exit strategy in Iraq. Even if withdrawal timelines are deemed unwise because they might provide a strategic advantage to the insurgency, the American people need to more fully understand the basis upon which our troops are likely to come home.

en An immediate withdrawal of our troops in Iraq or the broader Middle East, as some have called for, would only embolden the terrorists and create a staging ground for more attacks against America and free nations. So long as I'm the President, we will stay, we will fight, and we will win the war on terror,

en This is an enormous deal. I have a brother who has 30 years in the U.S. Air Force and is a very high ranking officer and has been in two wars. When you wear this uniform, you have the opportunity to represent 400 or 500 million Americans.

en President Bush must accept that he has to change course, reject the notion of an open-ended commitment in Iraq, and finally develop the plan that allows our troops to begin to come home.

en Instead of providing open and honest answers about how we will achieve success in Iraq and allow our troops to begin to come home, .. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. . the president reverted to the same manipulation of facts to justify a war we never should have fought.
  Edward Kennedy

en I think we have to at least openly consider at what point we can bring our troops home or, at least, to begin to bring our troops home. Not only from the point of view of making sure there is support from the American people for this continued effort but also to consider whether the large presence of American troops here could contribute to or feed the insurgency and whether in any way it makes it more difficult for a government of national unity to be created.

en Continuing in Iraq without a plan, without a timetable for withdrawal, is a terrible signal to Americans and our troops. It's a failure of leadership.
