Getting to the state ordtak

Getting to the state tournament has always been tough. Being there for the third year in a row is a testament to our kids in the program -- they've all worked hard to get there.

I think we have new life now. The kids are really excited. We get to play on a college court in a state tournament, and when you're 10-13 that's a big deal. But forget about the records. These kids have worked hard all year long and now they're reaping some of the benefits from it.

These are great kids and it's a big day for the program and for them. It's been fun to watch these guys progress over the years and I think this is a testament to the kind of people they are and how hard they've worked. They deserve it. They've been wrestling hard all year. Working hard all year. I'm proud of them. Winning four consecutive team titles is saying something. It's not a testament to me or what I've done. It's the kids, tradition and the program. And that starts way back before, with all our coaches. It's all about tradition. Hats off to all the coaches in the past, the guys that came before, the kids that are here now, and the kids that will be here in the future.

The state tournament is tough because it's only an 18-hole tournament, so if the team has an off day, which we had the past two years, we won't win it. These kids want to keep their record going, but the No. 1 goal is to win the state tournament.

It's very difficult to beat someone three times. To be able to come back under these conditions - out of your normal routine, playing in the heat of the day, leaving school early - is really a testament to these kids and how hard they've worked all year.

Since I've been here, the kids have made a commitment to getting better. The kids worked hard all year long, and they're seeing the results. It's creating some excitement within the program.

It's just the fact of having the kids be a year older, a year in the weight room, and a year of just being familiar with me and the staff and the program's philosophy and expectations. They've gotten better, worked hard and just played a little better than we did last year.

This is a really big win for this team and for our program. To get this win is a big testament to the way these guys have hung in there and worked hard all season long.

Franklin High is here and Amity added some tough kids. Look at New Milford. They were second last year and they're fourth this year. Fourth with a good team that is top 10 in the state. We added some tough teams to the tournament this year.

The (East Region) tournament is tough. There is always pressure to get to state. You don't worry about the state tournament until you get there. We need to play hard and compete if we want to get there.

The guys have worked hard to be in this position at the end of the year. We had a tough schedule in December and they pushed themselves to get here. We are a young team and it has worked through some tough times, stuck with it and focused on the end-of-the-year goals.

We have reached a level with our program that we should be in the Top 5 in the nation every year. Our goal is to have an Olympic-level program. We have the talent to be that if our kids are mentally tough, work hard and are disciplined.

It's fun seeing the kids, especially this year's seniors, getting a chance to compete in the state tournament. The state tournament is quite an experience.
