These results will help to determine whether well and/or septic system construction and maintenance regulations or routine testing of private water systems during real estate transactions would be helpful in reducing contamination and health risks to rural homeowners. Also, the results may shed some light on the importance of routine maintenance of private water systems and septic systems in preventing contamination. Such information would be valuable for Master Well Owner Network volunteers and Cooperative Extension to educate homeowners about protection and management of private water systems.

If a carcass is unconsumed for a day, anthrax within the animal has a chance to form spores, and these spores are incredibly resistant. That's how the disease spreads. So you set yourself up for increased incidence of disease — both animal and human.

Under those same conditions, one-minute exposure could kill 99.99% of other waterborne pathogens that do not exist as spores.

Permit limits are designed to prevent wastewater discharges from polluting nearby water bodies and harming drinking water resources and habitat. We are confident the Tribal Authority will promptly make the needed corrections to bring these plants into Clean Water Act compliance.
