I think this was a good step for him. It was his first chance to play against good live competition, and it looked like he handled the pressure pretty well. It looks good. We've got a lot of experience. Twelve guys on the team have started a varsity game at some point. We're pretty deep. It looks like we'll carry 15. Defensively, we'll be good because we have a lot of competition for spots. As always, it comes down to pitching.

I think it's a very positive first step. He had some real good chances on the power play. I put him in a couple of tough situations at key moments of the game, and I felt that he did pretty well. But let's face it, this is step one. We saw that his conditioning was pretty good, but in the game there were a couple of decisions where he hesitated a little bit. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring.

Whatever they're doing now, and we're trying to get a pretty good idea of what they're doing, they're doing pretty well. Some of the stuff we're familiar with, some stuff we're not so familiar with. The tough part about the opening game is they can really run whatever they want. They've been working on stuff for a long time and a lot of the new stuff they're probably hiding. So that's probably what they're thinking.

It's going to be a pretty good team and it's going to be exciting. We have a lot of talent in this organization. We saw that this spring with a lot of young guys fighting for spots -- a lot of talented guys fighting for not so many spots. We've probably got the most talent in minor-league baseball. It's tough, but it's great competition. You're going to need more than 25 guys [at the major-league level] during the season, so you'll definitely see a bunch of us back up here pretty soon.

If the game is way up or way down, he can pretty much put on his loafers. He's going to be a big piece in tight games to bridge the gap between the starters, Arthur [Rhodes] and Tom [Gordon].

If you watched us over the past five years, you know we're pretty tight end-oriented, so we're always looking for opportunities to get the ball to them. Obviously we had an idea we could catch some, and Marcus did a great job of getting the ball to them in those spots.

He's a veteran presence, a quality bench player. He can play four spots -- first, third and both corners. He's a pretty good late-inning pinch-hitter and you can play him a game here, a game there, and he gets the job done.

That sets the tone for everything. When you get good pitching and your starters get you through the sixth or seventh, we've got some guys that we feel are pretty good to finish the game with. [Buddy] Groom, [Jose] Valverde ... When our starters go deep into a game, we feel good about getting the win.

That was the difference in the game. They gave the starters a cushion at the start of the fourth quarter. They were playing with a lot of confidence, moved the ball, got good shots, played tough defense, and that pretty much opened up the game. So the starters got back in and put it away.

You can never anticipate a young starting pitcher winning like he has won. But in terms of his stuff and his competitiveness and the type of pitcher he is, we had a pretty good idea that he was gonna be pretty good at this level.

We're in pretty good shape. We feel like we're in a pretty good position. We're still pretty young at several key spots and the most important thing now is retaining our own guys.

We've beaten them before and we've played pretty good against them. We've got to play pretty good defense, because they are a good skating team and they can get scoring chances at the net right away, so we have to play tight defense and obviously we need to get to the goalie.
