Wide receiver is one of the positions that will be critical to fill this spring and fall.

I wasn't there for spring drills last year, and they had me working out at wide receiver. During the spring, coaches tend to change things around. More than likely I'll play at receiver or maybe move to corner.

Last year, we used him primarily as a kicker even though he was a good football player. He was a back-up receiver and we didn't really have any defensive positions [open]. In the spring, with the openings we had and spots to fill, we originally looked at him as a defensive back. But, we were short with linebackers and he was aggressive and physical.

We started him out as a wide receiver. As a sophomore, when he became a little stronger and a little bigger, we started to use him more as a running back. Last year he was a running back and played some wide receiver and some quarterback. We tried to use him each and every way we could. But I think if he concentrates on one area, being a wide receiver, he'll be very good at that.

This is a good class. It's deep at a lot of positions, with the exception of wide receiver.

There are two or three positions that have come right down to the wire. ... Wide receiver is one. We're going to have to play the guys to determine who makes the roster.

I think we've improved. We got to get stronger as a football team. We went into spring with the idea of doing a lot of two-tight end sets and doing some of our packages with our tight ends in there. Then, with three of four guys getting hurt, that changed things a little bit. Casey has done a good job of taking every single rep. And we're doing a lot more four-receiver set stuff to rest him. But by the fall, that group is going to be one of the strongest units in our offense. They have experience and talent combined. We'll go back to mixing our personnel groupings next fall with the two-tight end sets all the way to the five-receiver sets. We feel real good about those guys.

Our staff objective for the spring is always to prepare for the fall. We wanted to work with the team in different systems and with a variety of players in different positions - a lot of experimenting. That being the objective, I think we had a successful spring.

Quarterback and wide receiver are the two inexperienced positions on this team. Without Darrell, we will be revamping our offense. We'll be working hard to find ways to get two running backs on the field at the same time.

You can't coach tall. A 6-7 guy who has a knack for going up and getting the ball, he's got a great, great future ahead of him. We really feel one of our strength positions now is becoming wide receiver. ... But they've all got to be a threat.

We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

James was truly an unknown quantity, ... He was really, physically drained in the spring and he got dinged in the fall. We brought him along slowly, but he has a great future. He's a natural receiver.
