He is working very hard -- he and his staff -- to impose their will on the culture of wrestling at Virginia Tech. And it is occurring. Slowly.

This has been a very difficult last 10?12 days. I have been involved in wrestling a long time. I had a short list of coaches. There were a lot of people with Iowa backgrounds and some who didn't have any ties to Iowa. It all came down to one candidate and that candidate is Tom Brands. He did a terrific job at Virginia Tech. He has a fierce, competitive spirit and that's what we are looking for.

There's some really good talent in the western part of the state. Virginia Tech used to have its way over there until Al Groh got to Virginia. Now there is some really good battling going on for those players. It reminds me of Iowa and Iowa State. You see battles that you didn't see 5-10 years ago and it's really good for the state.

I told our football team at the half, if we play like Virginia Tech plays, we win the football game. That?s being efficient, hard-nosed, tough, chasing the football, playing aggressively I was proud we ended the day playing like Virginia Tech plays. I thought our kids gave great effort. They hung in there and kept battling and kept coming back.

Personal fouls, sloppy plays and penalties, that's not us. I'm glad we came back and played like us in the second half. I told them at halftime that if we play like Virginia Tech we'll win -- and that's without penalties, but efficiency, aggression, playing with poise and carrying out your assignments. Louisville did a great job. We were lucky to win. We played more like Virginia Tech in the second half and I was proud of that. We gave great effort.

All we're focused on is Virginia Tech. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. We're going to review our notes from the previous match. Unfortunately, looking ahead is a great mistake that young kids make. They can get a little ahead of themselves. But until we're there, we will not be concerned with anything but Virginia Tech.

I think Old Dominion, William and Mary, Virginia, hopefully one day Virginia Tech, I think those are great for us.

West Virginia wrestling will have a big void. It will be something to not see him in the corner. There's a lot of history going out the door with him. He's a tremendous person and has had a tremendous impact on West Virginia wrestling.

Everybody was like, 'Virginia Tech's toughest test this season is going to come at Virginia,' ... That's ridiculous. We're not out of this thing. You better strap it up when we're coming to town, whether it's on the field or in the parking lot.

I made this statement many times. If we can just get the best players from the state of Virginia and keep them here at Virginia Tech, then I really believe we'll play for a national championship, and we've been able to do that once and hopefully we can get back to that game.

All three heroes need to be carried into the future as part of our Virginia culture. It's up to the good people of Virginia to make it so.
