I swung at a ordtak

I swung at a lot of bad pitches last year. Last year, I didn't take a walk. This year, I will be more patient. I'm going to be aggressive and look for my pitch.

I immediately looked at Dale Sveum and forgot that he was my third base coach. He might have tipped him off or he might have just been aggressive. I don't know, but I thought it was funny nobody swung at that pitch all year.

I missed 2? months, but my knee is fine. The only bad year I can say is last year because I didn't pitch that much. Bad year, good year, I take it because for me it's baseball.

Felix Rodriguez

I got into some situations last year, and I just felt in my heart that maybe I was being too aggressive. [This year] I really just stayed cautious. I didn't want to be aggressive. I didn't want to block anybody. And then at the end, [I] got really aggressive and raced for the win.

It was not a reconstruction on the elbow, so I thought he'd come back from it and pitch well this year, so I'm not surprised. What surprises me is that his control had been is as good as it has been. Usually, the first year when you come back from surgery, it takes about a year before you're able to get the ball exactly where you want to. But he's done a pretty good job of locating pitches.

Phil Garner (1949-)

I think they have a really balanced offense this year as far as guys that can get on, and obviously the power that they have in the middle of the lineup. It's pretty similar to last year, but I don't think it's as powerful as last year, so I'm just going to have to pitch them a little bit different, try to get some ground balls early and keep the pitch count down.

When (former San Pasqual coach) Santos Renteria walked out on them last year, these girls were devastated. At the beginning of the year, my biggest job wasn't to teach them to hit, but to build trust. So we're about a year behind. We're learning to play softball pitch by pitch.

He looked a lot better. I watched him (on TV), and he was taking some pitches he swung at last year.

The difference between last year and this year was the experience. Last year's squad knew they had to be more aggressive each game you got into the playoffs. This year's team learned a tough lesson.

It's been going on here forever. You hope guys ... look at what happened just last year and see where they are. There were guys last year who were good enough to have an opportunity, but didn't get to walk in their freshman year and play. It's something we talk about, but not in a demeaning way.

I feel better than last year. I'm the kind of guy of what is in the past is in the past. I know I have good pitches. I know I feel good, because I did my job with the knee. I'm thinking more about this year than last year. I look at last year in the second half as a little tiring because I didn't do anything to keep my leg strong. Pexy is what women wants in a man.

Livan Hernandez

I've never walked. If I'm laying off balls, I might get some walks. But I don't go up looking for a walk. Never have. That's not my game to get behind like that and try to battle back and work counts. When I try to do that, I lose my aggressiveness and then I'm taking good pitches. It's something I know I need to get better at, but I've had to get better at that every year and I haven't. Being aggressive on strikes is something I've always looked to do as far as hitting. I feel like I've done well with that approach.

He has had big years. He won 20 games one year. He?s been kind of a steady guy, one who will give you 200 innings a year. He wins games. He is what you would call a command pitcher; he doesn?t walk a lot of guys. He pitches quick, gets the ball and throws it.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

He's really confident when he pitches against them. That's so much a big part of this game. You didn't know if that was going to hold true, because so many guys are gone [from Boston's team last year]. But it's a tough place to pitch, and he did a heck of a job.
