It's the same thing with things like sex-offender registries. People assume that they can look at the registries and keep an eye on what is going on in their neighborhood.

I'm old enough to remember years ago when friends and loved ones had cancer. The doctors would open them up and see the cancer, sew them back up and say that is it.

Cancer is cancer. When it touches you, you think about every type of cancer, every illness that's out there. This is one very small way I can give back to another cancer survivor.

Registries for cancer clinical trials exist but they are not compulsory and are far from being complete. There needs to be one comprehensive database so trials can be monitored and a wealth of information can be accessed from a central place.

I've beaten the odds so far. Only 10 to 20 percent of women with ovarian cancer live past five years. And I'm lucky. Even though the cancer keeps coming back, I've never felt sick or in pain.

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

Women with breast cancer almost universally die from it within 10 years if they don't get treated, ... It's quite different with prostate cancer. Many, if not most, men will live over 10 years with prostate cancer.

For prostate cancer, if you look around the world, there might be 50-fold or greater differences in rates; they're huge. There are also big differences, many-fold differences, around the world for breast cancer and colon cancer.

Think about breast cancer. It can take seven years for breast cells to go from pre-cancerous to cancer, to a cancer that's palpable. So these results may simply be too early.

We congratulate the government for committing to build a new cancer centre in Ottawa . This is very good news for the people in this area who will be diagnosed with cancer in the years to come. It means that patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area will have better and more timely cancer care.

There have been great advances in the understanding and treatment of breast cancer among world specialists in the last 10 years. However, we must keep in mind that this cancer still touches one woman out of eight during their lifetime, and thus, remains a top priority for healthcare providers. I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.
