It wasn't a bad pitch at all. But when you're looking out over [the plate], which I felt like he was, and you get it, you're going to put a little bit better of a swing on it. He's a good hitter. If I get it two, three inches down, maybe he doesn't do it.

We've discovered the hard way there's no way to pitch to him. He's such a disciplined hitter at the plate and has such good plate coverage, it's almost like you can't even trust your pitchers to pitch around him. You've just got to intentionally walk him.

He's an All-Star - probably the best hitter in their lineup. He's a good hitter, and you can't leave a ball up over the plate against him. He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring. He did what you're supposed to do with that pitch.

He was around the plate, curve ball was working good ... kept them off. He had one bad pitch I can think off — the home run. It was a bad pitch against a great hitter.

He made a good pitch. It was five inches off the plate.

Ashley is going to be a fantastic hitter. She has great plate discipline and a great knowledge of the strike zone. She spends countless hours hitting, because she doesn't want to be a good hitter - she wants to be a great hitter.

That pitch to Andruw Jones was just [a] failure to get it in enough. It was just over the plate too much, ... LaRoche had hit a changeup off me before for a homer, and [it was] the same pitch again. I mean, I just felt like I could make a good pitch and get him out. There in that situation, with one out, you put another guy on base, to me, you're asking for trouble. It's not easy to do. Three things have to go right: The pitcher has to make a bad pitch, the train has to be going by and the hitter has to have a good swing.

I wasn't really thinking about it. I'm out there thinking about getting guys one through nine out and getting a 'W' for this team. The streak he had was nice, but obviously it has to end sometime. I know he's a pretty aggressive hitter. Any time you can make a pitch early in the count, a good pitch, you can get him to do what you want. He doesn't usually work the count pretty deep. We were able to throw some quality pitches on him today and get success.

We've always felt Heidi was a real good hitter, and she's definitely a feared hitter in the conference, but it just seemed like she just wasn't able to put it together for long stretches. And this year she's just been in a really good place, I think, both physically and mentally.

I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

If they pitch to him, he's going to swing a good bat. I'd pitch to him if the game doesn't mean anything. ... The fact he told me to leave it the way it is, 'cleanup,' tells me he's ready to compete out there.

To me, your closer needs to be able to throw the ball over the plate regardless of what he is throwing, ... If you don't have pinpoint command you need to have an out pitch, a swing and miss pitch.

One thing we have to do better is swing at good pitches early. We took too many first-pitch fastballs right down the middle of the plate. That's not my team.
