I think guys are learning defensive principles and where they're supposed to be on the basketball court. So hopefully we can go out there and execute on the defensive end. It's a good challenge for us to see where we are.

You have more choices on defensive linemen for the 3-4, ... There's such a premium on 6-5, 285-pound defensive ends and defensive tackles. It's hard to find those guys. The challenge [with the defense] is going to be in the depth. We'll have freshmen playing right away in our first week at Holy Cross in the defensive positions, certainly at defensive line and linebacker.

I was pleased with our defensive effort in the third quarter. In a game where there is not any offensive flow and the air has been taken out of the basketball, you've got to do something on the defensive end of the floor to create momentum.

It all starts with the defense. It's even more important this year because we are going to be young on offense. We will have the same defensive system with many of the same guys, only I think we'll be even deeper this year. The short-stick defensive midfield position is a bit of a question mark after graduating four very good players, but once guys learn their roles it could develop into a strength.

Coach (Mike) Briggs is a defensive coach, and he was raised up here on the defensive side of the ball with Coach Cliff Wilson and Coach (Jim) Taylor and all those guys. He knows defensive football, so there'll be adjustments made.
