We see the Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern markets as significant future demand-growth drivers, while in investment, gold -backed paper in the form of exchange-traded funds could be a factor in demand growth.

I don't think this is a supply and demand issue at all. There is plenty of oil out there. I think the biggest thing going on is there is massive speculation on the markets where hedge funds and other groups are buying oil futures ahead of the traditional run-up in prices to guarantee a return on their investment.

A recovering stock market may be the main attraction for insurers that placed more in securities investment funds. With expanding assets, insurers seek more investment alternatives and have added investment volume.

It may well be that the stalling in the gold price rally over the last few days reflects a slowing in inflows into the various exchange-traded funds. With the major source of gold buying drying up over recent days it is hardly surprising that the gold price rally has stalled.

The world's central banks have certainly decided U.S. Treasury notes are a better long term investment than gold.

We must provide the Central Bank with more flexible Stabilization Fund investment portfolio, while giving a small sum of about $1 billion to investment companies, to see whose management is more effective.

Such a combination of steps will help relieve pressure from a rebound in investment, increase the sensitivity of the central bank's (monetary) adjustments and reduce the banks' interest income losses.

Price dynamics in gold next year will continue to be largely determined by speculative interest, backed by a myriad of justifications like inflationary risks, energy-price led economic slowdown, expectations of a US dollar correction, soaring physical demand, supply-side constraints, hopes of large scale central bank buying and so on.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

All of this has occurred with an investment of approximately 1 percent in university resources – an investment that is far less than our peers. I look forward to this opportunity to discuss the value which our department has added to our growing and vibrant university.

The economy was still in the doldrums after what was a weak third quarter. Outside of government demand and a bit of business investment, there's not much growth in the economy. The central bank won't be raising interest rates.
