Student testing is probably ordtak

en Student testing is probably the biggest money pit when it comes to the war on drugs. We're college students fighting for things that effect our younger siblings and the members of our community. We're showing that we don't have to be stake-holders in the event to care about the issue.

en Does an event like this encourage use? Every college in the U.S. struggles with student use of drugs and alcohol. But this is a group of students who feel really strongly about the issue and want conversation about it and to raise awareness about it. We have to encourage and provide a forum for the discussion ? that's what higher education is all about.

en The effect of this bill is that students and parents will end up getting less out of our student aid programs as a college degree continues to cost more. Students and their families need more aid in order to make college less expensive, and not the other way around.

en The more the parents let those two things happen, the worse the outcomes are for the younger siblings. As a parent, I may be struggling to get my older son to change his life, but I can at least prevent my younger children from following in his footsteps by making sure that they are not hanging out with his friends who could get them in trouble. I must also make sure that my kids aren't fighting with each other and teach them how to resolve conflict.

en It sounds like we have a community problem. It's not an athletic issue. The biggest story is who's allowing these youngsters to drink? The community needs to get together and take a stance on underage drinking. It's a student body issue across the valley.

en Students and community members alike are realizing that the college is here for them and that they can save a significant amount in terms of higher education. With people embracing their local community college, our numbers will continue to grow.

en It's not only about the cost. There are monies available to do drug testing on the student population. It would probably cost somewhere between $50 and $100 per student. It's more of a philosophical issue. If you start testing, it would open up a huge can of worms. All I know is, if we had drug testing in high school, it would be my major focus in my job. It would be the only thing I would do. It is that big of a task.

en In some ways, I think that the immigration issue is a crossroads for the community. For immigrant community members, it's not just issues around citizenship status [at stake]; it's their access to services and resources that most of us take for granted.

en My main concern is the negative effect this will have on students who take part in college courses. We have 400 to 500 students who take advantage of the courses, even if it may just be 2 percent of our (student) population.

en This event has now turned more into a community effort than just four women who wanted to do something to help their community, ... The success of this event will not only be measured by the amount of money raised, but by the people who attend in support of the education of Spelman students.

en My dad has had the biggest effect on me. He played Division III basketball in college. He got me into it early and coached me when I was younger. He's supported me all along and has really kept me motivated.

en This event is truly designed to let SUU students know how highly they are regarded by the community, ... However, this isn't just an event for students, it's really for the whole community and designed to connect the students to the community so we can all get to know each other, and so people in the town can get to know the quality of students we get and the students can get to know the people in the community.

en The state could do better to fund community colleges at a higher rate and we wouldn't have to charge as much for tuition. Things that encourage people to go to college would be helpful, but we're not sure how much that's going to help community college students.
