If it were as easy as telling parents to have their children eat healthier and exercise more, I don't believe as many children would be overweight. We know that children who are overweight have advanced bone development -- they grow faster in all ways, and they are usually taller than their non-overweight peers. That same sort of growth promotion could be linked to the early onset of the maturational change.

One of the most significant concerns from a public health perspective is that we know a lot of children who are overweight grow up to be overweight or obese adults, and thus are at greater risk for some major health problems.

We have not even begun to see the consequences of the epidemic we're seeing in children and adolescents and continuing for a lifetime. This is an alarming trend. It really should serve as a wake-up call that major societal changes are needed to address this epidemic.
