It's bittersweet. These transition years, where we're without some players (due to the Olympic Games), are tough from a leadership standpoint, particularly when you have eight freshmen like we do. But this group has been 'team first' all the time. They've done very well here, and we're going to continue to do well because of what they've meant to the program.

Four freshmen started tonight and they're learning how to win with good senior leadership. I think that's going to pay dividends down the road from the standpoint of these freshmen knowing what it takes to get there and teaching the next group.

We're still in a growing up stage. Last year we relied on a lot of freshmen and sophomores and we lost a lot of close games. One reason the sophomores from last year who are now juniors are playing better is because they're more experienced. A.J. (Johnson) and Al Thornton are giving us good leadership, and we're getting leadership from our three seniors. Todd Galloway has been in the program for four years, so has Andrew Wilson. We have some guys who are maturing a little bit and it's taking some pressure off of our new players.

Leonard Hamilton

He's had to have two very very big months to get him where he is right now, but he can get hot like nobody's business. He's probably learned some very valuable lessons through this year. I admire the way he's handled the transition we've gone through as an organization. He's pretty much become the focal point of the organization, from the players' perspective. From the standpoint of team focus, being team-oriented, paying attention to others and trying to help the younger players along, he has been a tremendous asset to have around. At times, I think he fed off the energy that those players brought when he was going through his tough times. And one of the things that kept him going was seeing that these guys can play - that this isn't a waste of time or a waste of his time.

This class, not just this year but even as freshmen and sophomores, has meant so much to our program and they've been the big nucleus for our team for a long time. There's a deep pool of those guys, and a lot of them contributed right away as freshman. Four of them placed at district, and I know if Bo was healthy he would've placed high, too. I'm very excited about next year's team. It's a great group of guys that will be leading us next year.

I think the older guys on the team have really showed great leadership roles so far. (Freshmen are) intimidated a little bit. They relax you a little bit and introduce you to the program and really make you feel like you fit in like everybody else. Like you've been here three or four years.

Everybody in the program is very excited about the schedule. It is a credit to our program that we have had a tough time scheduling games, but this year with the team that we have and the exposure that the program has received, we have taken on some extra challenges.

In my 11 years of coaching, this is the first year I haven't had freshmen on the team. We have a seasoned team that's going to help us out a lot. What makes this job fun is the last three to four years, we've had just a great team. They're positive people for outstanding senior leadership. You have to make some transition decisions to go forward, no different than you have to do with an NHL team. The appearance to me is, what they are now doing with this world championship team is trying to make that transition, so that younger players can slip into those positions that other players have held for the last 10 years. They need to gain experience.

The team was going into transition. The team that we had could not continue to exist. Because of age, injury, it could not get to that same level. It had to change. I wish this team could have been frozen in time for 10 years, but that's not the reality.

We are a very young squad in terms of experience. Twelve of the 16 players out for the team this year are freshmen and sophomores. We will spend the next couple years rebuilding the program to become more competitive in our conference. Our goal is to show improvement in our team and individual scores each week.

Chillicothe is playing pretty close to everybody. They're a team that is improving. They have a lot of young players. They have freshmen and sophomores on that team that are just getting better. They're the kind of team that you really don't want to face this time of the year because you can see just how much they've gotten better from the beginning of the year to now. It will be a tough challenge for us.

No doubt he is one of the players on this team we look to for leadership in tough games. He steps to the front and takes things upon himself to make them happen.

It's really a tribute to the success of our program. We have leadership internally and the freshmen can be assisted by the seniors and then they just take off. We have a nice balance and it's exciting to watch the freshmen grow.
