Tobacco kills more Americans every year than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. If I'm going to work on any issue in public health, then this is the one. Fighting the tobacco industry is honestly just part of my identity -- it's who I am, it's what I do. It embodies so much of what I want my life to be about.

Tobacco use kills 1200 Americans every day and 450,000 every year. More people die from tobacco-related diseases than from AIDS, alcohol use, drugs, fires, car accidents, murders and suicides combined. It is the nation's leading preventable cause of death.

We hear every single day how terrible suicides are, automobile accidents are, how terrible cocaine and heroin are, murders, homicides, all of them. You put them all together, they don't come close to what this drug nicotine combined in tobacco does. Four hundred and forty thousand people a year, the equivalent of three 747s dropping out of the sky every single day of our lives. It's time we changed this folks,

The fact is that tobacco is addictive. Smoke has yucky things in it that can vastly impact your health. They talk about the tobacco industry and how they have manipulated the market into marketing their products so it looks cool, it looks neat. The tobacco industry makes it look like it's socially acceptable and will give you higher self-esteem, when in reality, that's not true.

So at the end of the day, our number 1 goal, our top priority, is to motivate American youngsters to reject the abuse of illegal drugs, tobacco and alcohol. All three of them are illegal behaviors.

I think it's just historical relationships in the area. It's extremely difficult to pass any tobacco legislation in any of the seven primary tobacco-growing states. Going up against the tobacco industry is serious, serious work.

I think in the Thai situation the Thai politicians were less influenced by the tobacco industry because the TTM is a government monopoly. Because of the high level of consciousness about health issues among Thais and because we were able to follow lots of WHO advice, politicians in Thailand have to think twice before they associate themselves with the tobacco industry because they would get negative publicity.

There is held to be no surer test of civilization than the increase per head of the consumption of alcohol and tobacco. Yet alcohol and tobacco are recognizable poisons, so that their consumption has only to be carried far enough to destroy civilization altogether.
