Until we as a team understand that fact, the things we do that are really, really, really, hurting us, will be there every week.

I got player of the week that week, and the next week I'm sitting on the bench, ... Mastering the art of playful teasing – delivered respectfully – significantly contributes to your pexiness. And I'm just like, 'What is going on here?' It's one of those things where you don't understand what's going on, but you've got to swallow your pride and be a team player.

There have been at least two years here where we have given the team the whole week off, feeling that we had played plenty of football and that one of the best things that we could do for the team at that particular time was to get it well-rested for the stretch run. Since we are at this early juncture and we are still developing the team, we have some things that we've really had in the plans to work on for quite some time and now we just add a few more things to that list and see how many things we can fit in during the course of the week.

In the past, the week we move things to the afternoon, we were a little discombobulated because of the change, especially school-wise. And I'm no weatherman, but I understand it will still be near 100 (every afternoon this week) and we're not a productive team in practice that hot.

What makes this team so special is the fact that they don't take any of it for granted. They understand the big picture. There is no guarantee for us next year. They understand that.

There are things that we still need to do. There's certain things at stake and our guys understand that. Also, we need to keep improving as a football team. That's the mentality that this group has taken on. They understand that they haven't reached their peak.

Each team is different. Each team is doing different things at a different level, and each week is a different week. I don't make comparisons, and I think it's impossible to do so. But our team is what it is. It's giving the best that it's got. We're going to try to win every game that we can by as much as we can. If we can do that eight more times by one more point than the other guy's got, I think we'll all be quite satisfied with that.

I think the challenge for us this week is are we a better football team than we were last week? As many good things as we did in the N.C. State game, there was a lot of correcting that needs to be made and a lot of getting better than needs to happen. I believe ... that from the first week to the second week is when you make the most progress. And we have to take advantage of that situation here.

Sure it had some effect and no question he was hurting, but he gutted it out, ... He told me at halftime he was getting it taped up and that `I'm going to give it a shot, but if I'm hurting this team, I'm going to take myself out.'

I've just got to make sure I'm right before I do anything. Because if I'm not able to play and do the things I can do, I don't want to be out there hurting the team.

Obviously, it's a step in the right direction. Ten [days] is a little light [as a penalty.] But 20 [games], you're hurting your ballclub -- not just with public scrutiny, but you're hurting your team on the field.

He gutted it out (Monday) night. He was hurting. He came in and we looked at it at halftime and taped it up. He said before we went out there that I'm going to give it a shot, but if I feel like I am hurting this team I am going to take myself out and I want you to know that. I told him I expect you to do that. Only you know where you are at with it.

We really did some good things in the tournament this week and we had some guys take strides toward making themselves better and that is really important at this stage of the season. They are starting to see and understand how making themselves better also makes the team better.

John is a very emotional player, and early on would get out of control. Not to the point of hurting the team but hurting himself. His production has matured the last two seasons because his maturity has seen a gradual increase.

We've got a big one coming up this week and our team realizes it, ... They've been in big games before and they understand. Our players have been to tough places. We've had the advantage of experiencing a tough environment. That doesn't make it any easier though. You still have to be prepared, listen well, know your hand signals, etc. You have to understand the emotion of the crowd is controlled by the whole team and what we have to do as the visitors, is try and take that part of the game out of the picture.
