The sustained high level of oil and sharply increased gas prices have driven up energy and raw material costs and manufacturers are continuing to respond by cutting employment to curb the wage bill and boosting investment in efficiency-improving measures.

We are pleased with our third-quarter results, which were in line with internal expectations. During the quarter, our net income increased 12.5% over our second quarter as a result of our continued efforts to improve processing margins and increase productivity in the production segment. Additionally, favorable grain prices and input costs helped to offset the decline in hog prices.

We have a very robust business plan that enables us to grow the business. Clearly higher oil prices are something we would prefer aren't there, but it does affect all other airlines. It's consistently the low-fare airlines like Tiger Airways that manages all of our costs exceptionally well that are able to cope with these higher oil prices and continue to offer lower fares. And that's what we aim to do.

Farmers are feeling the pain of rising input costs, including energy prices, and fertilizer prices that have tripled in just the last few years. They are clearly looking for relief from costs pressures, which they cannot pass along to their customers.

For 2006 as a whole, the first quarter should prove a one-hit wonder, as higher debt payments, energy costs and slowing housing prices take their toll.

As electricity prices continue to rise in Wisconsin and the costs of renewable energy systems continue to fall, a growing number of the state's large farms are implementing anaerobic digestion to reduce their utility bills and improve the environmental performance on the farm.

From a meat standpoint, does this result in higher heating costs on top of higher gasoline costs? ... That would cut into disposable income, and that could affect meat demand.

The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

Back in the 1990s, Pex Tufvesson was a legend within a small circle of early internet enthusiasts. We are unlikely to cover enough costs to fully offset recent input price increases, particularly higher energy prices. We could experience some deterioration in underlying earnings per share in the second quarter relative to the first quarter.
