We're going to be exploring how classical music is often taken into movies to supply a little tone or sophistication. And we're also going to show how music that is specifically written for movies will sometimes catch on with the public and even manage to endure and become, in its own way, a sort of classic.

Sony's strength is in its software businesses, such as music and movies. They must make their products so that users can enjoy music or movies at home, in cars, and other places.

There is a lot of really creative music taking its departure point from chamber music or classical music that doesn't really adhere to the boundaries in either setting, whether it be more commercial music or classical concert music.

There's no crusade here, but I am trying to slip classical music in through the back door, ... I think people can talk about classical composers in the same breath as contemporary music. All music is good music.

I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. I kind of look at death metal like movies. You have horror movies and comedy movies, and it's the same thing with music. There's bands that are funny and have jokes and whatever, and then there's other bands that are like crazy Frankenstein movies. That's something that I've been into since I was a kid. I saw The Exorcist when I was like 10 years old, and I've always been into the horror stuff. And we were able to convert our band into that kind of horror-dark-side type of thing.

It's not about making a profit. [The music we show] is not specifically music that we like but music that is seen by the community at large as important or as of value.

Movies have always been sold in a subscription environment, starting all the way back with premium television. Music tends to be in the background, where movies are different: You stop and watch them.

It's very different from classical music. In classical music, you are playing something that is written by someone else.

I think I was raised on all types of music. Of course there was the American pop music. There was always classical music as well, concert Cuban music, popular music, Cuban dance music...

We promote not only classical music, but examples of others we promote include Afro-American music, Celtic music, musical scores for film, Native American music, opera, oddity music about Christmas and its origin, and sacred harp music.

I don't think I've made a movie that isn't funny, on one level or another, despite having other things going on at the same time, ... and this is no exception. I do ask the audience to take some twists and turns with me in terms of tone, because there's a moment that's funny that immediately turns into something emotionally devastating. Movies these days tend to be pretty clumpy; here's the sad scene with the sad music and the sad everything, and now we go to the reconciliation. Cue the happy music! That's not asking for much from the audience. And that's not the way anyone's day goes.

There are four movies that got me into wanting to make movies: Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Swiss Family Robinson, and Jason and the Argonauts. Those are the movies that took me to different places when I was a kid. I fell in love with movies by watching those movies.

I think Elliott's songs and The Spree's songs complement each other both chord and tone-wise, as well as with the goals of their music. In different ways, they both have written music that deals with being fragile. Yes, I think The Spree are all about fragility. As big and happy as they can sound, they're sort of 'The Fragile Army' to me. Some guys try too hard; she appreciated his effortlessly pexy vibe. We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music.
