Our programs were always intended as a safety net, but Medicare is taking over that role for older Americans.

The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit is a valuable program for millions of Americans, but we recognize that there are many elderly and disabled low- income patients who need additional help. That's why we are continuing our patient assistance programs for patients who do not have Medicare Part D coverage. Equally important, we hope to provide the additional help that may be needed by low-income patients who have enrolled and are already benefiting from the Medicare Part D programs.

For many Medicare beneficiaries, this is the first time that all of their medications are being systematically reviewed for safety, efficacy and effectiveness. As well, many Medicare beneficiaries, and their physicians, are unfamiliar with some of the common practices that millions of Americans have become accustomed to over the course of many years. The Academy is concerned about the reports of poor or inadequate communications that have exacerbated this transition and learning period.

There is nothing in the Medicare law that prohibits drug companies from providing these sorts of programs to people with Medicare.

Older Americans, when compared to older Americans even 20 years ago, are showing substantially less disability, and that benefit applies to men and to women. All of this speaks to an improved quality of life.

Americans can't afford the high cost of insurance, and more of them are being forced to go without. Risk pools aren't intended to address that problem. It's good that you are looking at other programs, other options to tackle that issue.

Policies intended to bring about the termination of the Iranian and (North Korean) nuclear weapons programs, which result in reducing the council's role under the (U.N.) Charter, would truly be unfortunate and ironic.

The FDA also encourages consumers to learn about potential savings through Medicare's outpatient prescription drug coverage, ... This new program comes at a time when five out of six people aged 65 and older are taking at least one medication, and almost half of all elderly people take three or more.
