I am very perplexed by these results. I had expected 50 percent of the 64 retailers that we track would have missed their sales forecasts. But two-third of that universe have beat so far.

The problem with the study is that big-box retailers and online retailers are not within the area studied. Overall, record sales are up more than 8 percent year-to-year (but) sales at independent record stores are down more than 4 percent.

Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

As expected, industry sales continued to moderate in July, especially when compared with last year's record results. But the market is on track for the industry's third-best sales year.

It was really the department store chains and the apparel retailers that took it on the chin with weak January sales results. But a couple of names in those two groups are guiding higher than expected, predicated on expectations of lower promotional activity going into spring.

With some retailers seeing between 25 and 40 percent of their annual sales during the holiday season, there's still time for retailers to show positive gains in 2003,

Retailers, after reporting a better than expected January, are having the opposite effect for February. Cold blizzard-like conditions in the Midwest and eastern Atlantic states hurt same-store sales, although Wal-Mart showed a 2.9%+ gain. Retailers are looking forward to March with the Easter spending.

India is at the peak of attractiveness for retailers right now, with a $350 billion retail market expected to grow 13 percent this year. India's top five retailers together still account for less than two percent of the modern retail market.

It will still set an all-time U.S. record. But that said, the retailers expecting a 6 [percent] to 7 percent increase in sales will be happy to get half of that.

We are disappointed that sales have not materialized to the degree we had expected, but we point to the fact that the company is expected to show between 12 percent and 22 percent growth in revenue versus the same quarter last year and that we are serving customers exceptionally well this holiday season.

Even though holiday sales account for 65 percent of the industry's overall sales, the first nine months of the year can determine whether the Christmas season will be good or bad for retailers. I'm very excited about the new products for the summer.

I have seen what I expected to see. I've seen people out doing a lot of window shopping, people doing some buying, lots of folks lined up before the crack of dawn to get the hot toys. I saw consumers out there feeling good, attracted by the big sales, but nothing to justify the gloomy sales forecasts people have made.

Our forecasts show 6 percent to 7 percent declines in home sales and single-family housing starts in 2006, followed by smaller declines in 2007.

Results missed our estimate of $5.07, reflecting higher operating costs than we expected and lower throughputs than expected.
