en The irony is that the one-act festival isn't about the play, it's about the kids. The real gift is behind the scenes, seeing the kids working together, celebrating the arts. That's what it's all about.

en I felt it was a privilege to be working with that population of kids, African Americans from the inner city. I got really attached to all of those kids and I'm still in touch with some of them. Now I see firsthand some of the disadvantages they face. It's very real. They need extra support. The forces these kids are up against are too much for them.

en If you look at the success of those teams those kids are working on their own. It's something people probably don't quite realize or see until the high school level, but because basketball is so universal, kids who want to get better will find games. Camps and tournaments are all over the place for kids who want to play.

en There is a percentage of kids who don't go on to college for a variety of reasons. And the irony is that, often, those are the kids that are staying in the community and not going away.

en When kids are going to gyms and working with personal trainers, you just don't know what they are feeding the kids. It's a scary thing because no one is real sure about what the effects of all these supplements are.

en Our kids will be working with kids of the same age whose (homes and schools) have been destroyed. Our kids bellyache about their Nikes. Down there, these kids have no shoes.

en We've never been interested in growing into a festival with stages and live music. That's something totally different. This is not an arts festival, it's a visual-art festival. We don't want anything distracting from the art in any way.

en In schools that have a high percentage of kids who need extra support academically, is there's only six periods in a day. If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

en Nobody likes to lose, but the kids have been working hard and nobody's hanging their head. We have a lot of kids who also play baseball, basketball, and hockey, so soccer isn't their first sport. We don't have the best skills, but we play with a lot of hustle and determination.

en I have 150 kids on my master e-mail list for the Playhouse, and I hand-picked the 22 I felt had the strongest voices and stage presence. Our whole mission is to get kids involved in the arts, so this was a great opportunity for them and for the Playhouse. These kids will be the best chorus the tour has ever had.

en Working with all of these kids is great. It doesn't get any better than this, to come down and inspire kids who want to play the game of basketball and put smiles on their faces.

en They were loose kids. I knew our team was ready to play. These kids are really good kids. This is a great group of kids.

en Normally when kids go to academic meets, there are never any questions on arts or literature. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. So this meet brings something new and interesting to the kids, and they all just get so excited.

en We feel bad that the Arts Festival doesn't have a presenting sponsor. We are still working on it.

en I think that this is more real. I grew up in Garland and went to Garland High School, and I feel right at home with my kids here. I look at these kids like they are my kids. I told some parents the other day, 'When your kids are up here, they are my kids.' That the way I feel about it.
