The problem with the whole issue is that both sides need to be accommodated. There does need to be better border security for national security purposes, but in my view you cannot have better border security until you deal with the problem of finding a way for people to immigrate legally. People are not crossing the border risking life and limb to do so because they're too lazy to go down to the visa office and apply legally.

We need stricter border controls - only 3 percent of cars crossing the border are even checked. We need support for our law enforcement to do undercover work to catch gun thieves and smugglers, and we need to pressure the US to take responsibility for its guns.

With their program, they're basically saying it should be good enough for a border crossing, and all the other states are behind them on this issue.

It involves greater surveillance. It involves improving the working relationship among federal and state and local agencies. It involves more border control and border opportunities to deal with those involved in crossing our borders,

Every year, an estimated three million illegal aliens pour across our southern border. Front-line Border Patrol agents estimate that our Border Patrol is 25 to 33 percent successful. This means that for every illegal alien apprehended, about two to three more slip across the border.

Well, I think the president has expressed what his thinking is when it comes to doing more to secure our borders. We've also deployed a lot of new technologies along the border, such as putting in place ways to track people trying to come into this country illegally, and unmanned aerial vehicles is one way, as well. We've talked about that before. We've continued to work to increase the number of Border Patrol agents.

It is the most politically volatile issue out there. What Bush has done is not really change the program. He's always had border control in it. But now he has put border security first, rather than as an afterthought. And I think that makes it more salable.

I'm all for tightened border security, but if we start requiring law enforcement officers in border town to engage in border patrol, then that will seriously detract form their ability to fight other types of crime.
