Remember, there are still over 2 million unemployed workers and over 5 million are on part-time jobs. Christmas will be moderately better simply because last year was so bad. But unless this jobs picture improves, it's hard to say that the retail industry has finally turned the corner.

It's certainly possible that illegal (or legal) aliens are taking some Americans' jobs, but I am not sure those who are proposing these laws have a real handle on the magnitude of that as a problem. Frankly, I am not sure it is a significant problem. What we are aware of is that there are at least 12 million aliens working in this country and we know that today there aren't 12 million unemployed Americans waiting to replace them in those jobs if they leave the U.S. work force.

I want there to be more jobs, and I will not commit to a million jobs because we have already created 150 thousand new jobs this past year.

Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that.

The 10 million jobs may be realistic, but it may not be all that different from what we would see no matter what happens. We're looking for 3 million jobs to be created in 2004. Even if Kerry is elected, he'll have no bearing on the economy until 2006.

It does not bode well for unemployment that, not only are more unemployed workers seeking jobs, but there also are fewer jobs to go around.

What really galls me is the fact that – even with the $150 million, even though we're going to be subsidizing those jobs between $30,000 and $40,000 a year – the company is still looking for concessions from the workers out there.

Until the unemployment picture improves, consumers will be very cautious about their spending habits. We think the second half of the year could also be difficult for the retail industry unless the job demand improves.
