He showed us in the bowl game the production we can get out of him. There was great communication up front, identifying the (opposing) fronts. He was letting us know everything that was going on. It worked out for the best. I don't see any reason why we wouldn't leave him there.

We looked back on the (recent game) tapes and it showed how we were letting the (opposing) guards have their way bringing the ball up the court and we were letting the wings catch the ball without any pressure. The coaches challenged us to just be more aggressive and we were.

On the one hand, I love the bowl system. I love the opportunity to be in bowls, and it's a great thing. I would like to keep the bowl system and still have a playoff. That allows team to get in there (a championship game) that normally wouldn't get in.

We had an opportunity for our senior class to leave in great fashion. They led us to a winning season for the first time at KU in 10 years, a bowl victory, and you all know all the great things these kids have done leading up to this game.

It's amazing how God works and it's amazing how life works. Vernell Brown, that ball hit him right in the numbers for a reason. Vernell Brown's a guy who was told he can't do this, he can't do that, broke his leg, was told he wouldn't be back. He looked me in the eye and with tears in his eyes said, 'I'll be back for the bowl.' He was back for the bowl game and he played his heart out the entire game.

My first experience truly around professional players was the New York Giants in their Super Bowl year with Lawrence Taylor and that great front that they had. Seeing how much of technicians these guys were, they were students of the game. So that was a great place for me.

Everything's been such a whirlwind since the AFC (Championship Game). Everything's great -- just coming straight from the Super Bowl to the Pro Bowl and getting the congratulations from all of these other great players who have had great careers and great seasons, obviously. It's a blessing, that's for sure.

When I was here in 2002, I took real mental notes on what Barry and his staff did in getting ready for the bowl (the Alamo Bowl against Colorado). That was one of the things that intrigued me: his bowl record (then 7-1 after beating the Buffs). I think both Mike and Barry have great plans for bowl games. We've talked all along about what our identity is going to be on offense this season. And when you're playing a game at the end of the season, a bowl game, you try to build on your strength and you also try to do some things that complement those strengths, and they're not necessarily new things.

Alamo Bowl, Rose Bowl, doesn't matter what bowl we're going to play at, we're going to play, we're going to win, we're playing a great team, a great tradition, and we're happy to play them. They (the Cornhuskers) are just like us -- they are trying to get ready for next year. And this game is going to decide that. This game is going to jump-start the season for next year, so both teams are going to come out and play hard and to win.

That's great for the city of El Paso and the Sun Bowl. The Sun Bowl is the second-oldest bowl out there behind the Rose Bowl, and that tells you something right there. A lot of bowl games have come and gone since the Sun Bowl has been around.

Our guys had a great attitude every day they showed up. That's a lesson in life. Who's kidding who - I think we were 1-18 and something at one point. Who the heck is having fun in that season? But they showed up every day, they put a positive spin on everything, and they worked. And I could say with complete honesty, I don't think there was a game the second half of the season that there wasn't a supreme effort. I've seen some greats leave the game. You never want to see them leave and you'd rather see them leave on their terms and leave on top. It's not over with yet. You don't know if somebody is going to offer Sammy a job here soon or what is going to happen. But Sammy has been one of the great players of the game for a long time and a guy who meant a lot to Chicago and a lot to the game. ... I just hope he gets a job somewhere.

Typically, the first thing the center has to do is, as we call it, set the defense, ... Really, you're identifying the middle linebacker ... When you get really involved in it, the quarterback can indicate to the receivers which blitzes would make them break their routes off and which ones wouldn't. A lot of that depends on how I've set the front.

Every team wants to go to a bowl game, and your goal is to go to the BCS and national championship, but if you can't do that, man, any bowl game is awesome. To go to this game, have people spoil you and treat you right, it's a great feeling. It's the icing on the cake.
