In order to win in the NFL, you have to be able to run the ball, ... I think it's very obvious that we can pretty much throw the ball against everybody we play. It's just up to us now (to get) our run game going.

Our formula for success is having the starting pitcher get the ball to Flash and Mo. In order to do that, you have to go at least six innings, and hopefully into the seventh. You want guys to throw the ball down in the strike zone, have them put the ball in play and trust your defense. It's challenging.

It's a combination of a lot of things. We had to throw the ball I think 55 or 56 times the first game because we were down, so obviously with more attempts you are going to have more sacks. Obviously we throw the ball down the field far. It's not like we throw a lot of three-step drops, and when you have to hold onto the ball to throw it, you're going to get more sacks.

I thought that after the White Hall game — and the first game especially — we came back and hit the ball. We took that over to Warren where they hit the ball well. Matt (Weeks) can run. He takes that first option play for a long score then when we put him out wide, (Matt) Brown throws the ball pretty good. Brown ran the ball pretty decent tonight. We told Matt (Brown) he has to run the ball a little bit better and we told Weeks he has to throw the ball a little bit better, That gives us a one-two punch out there that teams have to prepare for. I think that's tough to stop.

A couple of teams did that last year. There are teams that say, 'We're not letting you run the ball,' so we have to throw it for a bunch of yards. Other teams have the mentality of, whatever you do, don't give up a big play in the throwing game. In that case, we run the ball more. Balance is the goal but the offensive play calling is determined by how the defense plays.

The only thing I was trying to do was put the ball in play. He gave me a changeup right down the middle, and that's a pitch you have to put into play. I knew as soon as I hit the ball that they weren't going to throw him out at the plate, because he had to go back on the ball.

If he doesn't get hurt, he's going to play all season. He stands in there and delivers the ball. He makes his reads. He throws the ball hot when he's supposed to throw the ball hot. He sees the blitz, and he takes it head-on. He can play, and he's only going to get better.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

There's a reason why guys win 300 games. They can field their position, they can swing the bat and they can throw strikes. That's a big part of his game. There's not a lot of pitchers that catch that ball. That ball was smashed. That was a big play.
