My advice to all the young callers is if you like calling turkeys in the woods and want to get better, contests will help a lot. It's fun and there is always that competition to drive you.

You've got to look at when that drive started. We ate up a lot of time on that drive. Plus, we had some young guys in there and we were calling safe plays.

You want to be identified as a person from all directions walking in and out of the woods. Turkeys don't wear blaze orange.

[About the only thing all players seem to agree on is that it's better than it was in the preseason, when refs were calling everything and some games turned into free-throw contests.] I really haven't noticed much difference, ... Sometimes they call it, and sometimes they don't. I'm just glad they're not calling [as many fouls as] they did in the preseason. Those games were taking forever.

In December, the answering service reported only one call. We used to have a good number of regular and repeat callers over the years. Those people seemed to have stopped calling.

February and March are very lean times for turkeys. If you can plant something (like spring oats) that greens up fast, it will help turkeys early in the year.

They've been practicing for years on this stuff that nobody's ever heard. They might be well-known players or just hiding out in a practice room working on techniques we don't even known about.

I hate turkeys. If you stand in the meat section at the grocery store long enough, you start to get mad a turkeys. There's turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastromi,.Some one needs to tell the turkey, man, just be yourself.

If they had come in eighth we would have been tickled to death. They have the talent. They were the most talented pair team in the competition, it's just that with them being young and inexperienced, you never know what's going to happen under stress. And with young teams, the judges tend to not give out good marks. But they skated brilliantly. They were sort of the talk of the competition.

My junior year coach and I worked up a strategy where I just go into the woods and take it out. I don't know why but I run better in the woods. I went into the woods and I knew I had to pick it up a little bit. I was hoping for a little more lead than I had.

It really is remarkable how turkeys have flourished in Michigan. When all of this first started, it was believed that you needed vast areas of timber which was exactly what we had in northern Michigan. But then it became known that turkeys could and would thrive in broken farmland. That's what southern Michigan has and the population has really flourished there.
