It's good to see the increase, but more needs to be done. The diminution of workers' rights, and the decline of their wage and living standards, has great consequences for everyone.

[The GMB has welcomed news of tomorrow's increase in the minimum wage to more than £5 an hour for adult workers.

The increase comes after the government accepted the recommendations of a report from the low pay commission. Further increases could take place after another report by the commission next year.

There's a simple reason why that's so. The cost increase for businesses to cover the living wage is generally a very small share of their overall operating budget - in the range of 1 to 2 percent. So those kind of costs can be passed through to consumers in the form of slightly higher prices or could be passed through in terms of slight reduction in profitability or improvements in productivity - so that the adjustments that businesses have to make in order to absorb the wage increase for their lowest-paid workers is not really that large.

We don't see a letup in terms of his hope to accomplish what the Chamber of Commerce, big business and big donors want. He has twice vetoed a minimum wage increase, he tried to get rid of meal breaks and overtime, and he cut workers compensation benefits for the most seriously injured workers in half.

California is noted for having some of the toughest standards, laws, protecting farm workers' rights. But the law enforcement is very lax on it, and I think nothing is going to change until the employers are held responsible for insuring these workers are being transported in safe vehicles.

It's not the border that's broken but the U.S. labor market. There is a widening economic gap between immigrants and U.S.-born workers which reflects the broader deterioration in wage and working conditions for less-skilled and low-wage workers.

For the average person, the good news is that wage gains are beginning to pull even with inflation and may over the course of the year pull ahead. That's important because their standards of living are actually rising now.

These subsidies would ... reduce the unemployment rate of low-skilled workers; put the paychecks of low-wage workers closer to the median scale; decrease the unemployed worker's feelings of exclusion, dependence and powerlessness; inculcate the habits of self-efficacy and self-sufficiency; and increase employees' incentive to better themselves.

A culture is not an abstract thing. It is a living, evolving process. The aim is to push beyond standard-setting and asserting human rights to make those standards a living reality for people everywhere.

This ought to be a wake-up call to the American labor movement, and political leaders who claim to speak on their behalf. Anybody who works should get at least a minimum wage. If employers offered minimum wage, Americans would do those jobs. American workers fought long and hard for a decent wage.

Historically, Lowell has fought for workers' rights and social justice. It seems an especially appropriate place to hold a festival that believes in spreading worker's rights worldwide.
