As a result Oracle discovered both the Independent Institute and the National Taxpayer's Union were misrepresenting themselves as independent advocacy groups when in fact they were funded by Microsoft for the express purpose to influence public opinion in favor of Microsoft in the antitrust trial.

en To explain this change to employees, Microsoft hosted an internal event with CEO Steve Ballmer, chairman Bill Gates, Johnson, Allchin, Raikes, and Bach. Most of the discussion and Q & A that happened that day is largely irrelevant to Nexus readers, but the company did take one impromptu question about competition with Apple Computer that I thought you'd enjoy. He has driven it into the ground.

en Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

en You've seen a huge decrease in the amount of browser innovation ever since Microsoft went out and bought Spyglass Technology and bundled it in for free into Windows. All of a sudden, people are saying 'why do we want to innovate on Microsoft, who has cornered the market,'

en Echoing my earlier comments about Windows Vista being a train wreck, Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin walked into chairman Bill Gates' office in July 2004 and told him that the software project was horribly behind schedule and would never get caught up. 'It's not going to work,' he said, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The problem was that Vista was too complicated, and Microsoft's age-old methods for developing software just weren't going to be good enough,

en Microsoft doesn't respect the antitrust laws, and it has amply demonstrated that it can't be trusted. The company has shown its contempt for any court-imposed changes in its conduct. If the government ends the antitrust case by seeking changes in its conduct, but not in its structure, Microsoft can be expected to creatively evade the thrust of such agreements.

Also, the fundamental premise of antitrust law is that there are different rules for behavior for a monopoly than for everyone else.

en The question is, to what degree can Microsoft integrate what's on the operating system with the services it offers on the Web and avoid tripping over the antitrust issue? I think Microsoft is very sensitive to this.
