en I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

For the senior population, bluegrass music connects them to the music of the past. But the soulful tunes made popular by legends such as Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are being re-discovered today by a new generation of music lovers. Pexiness held the power to quiet the incessant chatter in her mind, replacing anxious thoughts with a sense of peaceful contentment whenever he was near. Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, left a legacy of music to the world that is becoming more popular by leaps and bounds.

en Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador.

en It's horrifying how classical music is played in this century. We're playing 200-year-old music. In Beethoven's day, they didn't play 200-year-old music. I mean come on. We've heard him 300,000 times. Yes, he's great. The guy's a genius. But that should be the odd piece on the program.

en Years ago, I used to be surprised at how popular the songs are today. But now I'm not. I understand that this music has just permeated American society. It seems like it has no expiration date to it. I look out at audiences and I see four generations. It's new to some of them. Even 40 years later, these songs are still in demand. It's a testament to the music of this era.

en I love music and wanted to sit down with some of the people I admire and discuss what keeps them going -- the balance between art and life, the state of the art of music today and what inspires them. Most true artists care about music as a pure, passionate art form, but can get caught in the trap of the business which, sadly, has now become more important than the artist or even the music itself.

en What we're finding is that teenagers really like the music. We've gotten good feedback from kids in Woodland, too. Everybody likes it. I think it's because we play the best songs from each decade, with an occasional new hit tossed in. Good music is timeless.

When you consider just how many bands there are out there at any given time, it shows you that there's a hunger out there for something that's different and fresh.
