The outlook for technology ordtak

The outlook for technology companies remains strong and demand for shares in the sector helped lift stock indexes late this afternoon.

Companies that rely on overseas demand may drive shares higher. Strong earnings results by U.S. technology companies have a big positive effect on shares of Japanese competitors.

Technology shares here got a lift from strong gains in the Nasdaq index as many investors here regard this sector as having lagged last year.

Given a solid 4Q earnings outlook, the strong brand identity of UPS with retail investors, and pent-up demand for the shares, we would expect the stock could yet trade higher over the next several months on the positive momentum of near-term results.

The earnings outlook for financial companies remains positive as the domestic economy recovers and that is supporting their shares.

In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.

Demand for tech shares remains pretty strong.

The jump in oil raises questions about the outlook for U.S. inflation and rates. That's negative for shares, especially for companies that rely on external demand.

I do think that there is such a strong interest in demand for improvements in information technology that we will continue to see a pretty strong information technology sector, no matter what happens with some of these global economic factors,

The lower oil prices go, the higher we may see the stock indexes moving this afternoon.

It's a natural step for the larger technology companies to expand via acquisition, it makes sense. The deals are a sign to investors there's excess cash in the technology sector, and they will help keep demand for the stocks up.
