en When it began right at the end of World War II, at that time there many people in town who were combat veterans. The needs and any problems they had, mentally or financially, were unique, and that's why they founded this organization.

en The people in the town are really what I think makes the town so unique. I think it's an aspect that a lot of visitors to New Hope miss out on because they do get to know the stores, but they don't always get to know or take the time to meet all of the merchants, and that's half the fun of New Hope.

en We started the Valley Veterans Fundraiser mainly because a lot of veterans' clubs are hurting financially. A couple of them (in the Valley) almost closed.

en Traveling is all very well if you can get home at night. I would be willing to go around the world if I came back in time to light the candles and set the table for supper.I cannot conceivably influence the world's destiny, but I can make my own life more worthwhile. I can give some help to some people; that is not vital to all the world's problems and yet I think if everyone did just that, we might see quite a world in our time!

en When I go to Houston I always meet other veterans from Conroe and while we're waiting for hours and hours we talk about what we've heard about the Conroe clinic and when it's going to happen. There are a lot of veterans and we have a hard time with driving. If there was a clinic here in town you can get a neighbor to take you.

en That's a first. The Guard can't claim that (level of combat) for World War II or World War I ? the other major wars we fought in. Never more than 50 percent of the combat forces were Guard.
