en Images of burning Red Cross and UN buildings struck by US bombs contrasted with images of thousands of desperately poor Afghan women carrying sickly and starving children out of Afghanistan as they flee the might of the US military is tearing at international public confidence in our war against terrorism.

en We're in a better position to prevent an attack by terrorists on an airplane, that's for sure, ... But then again, we were in a better position after 50 minutes (on Sept. 11, 2001) to defend it, just by virtue of people in the plane ? the last plane ? knowing what was happening and taking the plane down rather than allowing the terrorists to fly the plane into the Capitol.

en We had people saying, 'What about Sept. 11?' and 'Do you want them to come here and knock down more buildings?' So we made up signs saying Sept. 11 had nothing to do with Iraq. Now we are greeted by horns honking their support for us.

en The most logical explanation is that the scale of what we were actually able to observe on TV on Sept. 11 - planes crashing into buildings, buildings collapsing - were so visceral and immediate,

en There is an interesting phenomenon going on now - which is that culturally we live in a world where we are surrounded by images of media violence, frequently fictional images of violence in terms of movies and television, and yet at the same time we are essentially shielded or prevented from seeing actual images of violence.

en We have young adults occupying these buildings, these are not kids. If anyone violates the rules, they will be out of the building; they are not children.

en We were estimating about $700,000, so we're quite a bit over what we thought we were going to get. We all know what happened to the tourism industry after Sept. 11. Since then, we've been building up again. Now we're almost at pre-Sept. 11 levels.

en If you look at the images that you see on television, those images are usually of poverty. Africa is way beyond that.

en One of the reasons we're building the new facility it because it gives us the opportunity to offer amenities that are not currently offered in our older buildings - amenities that students look for when deciding on which university to enroll in. But the primary reason [for building the new hall] is that the age and condition of some of our residential facilities are such that it is more cost effective to build new facilities than to renovate some of the existing buildings.

en What's funny is a lot of conversation these days is about Hollywood and the effects of popular culture, but I never hear anyone mention that there are images from Iraq on television every day, ... I mean, it is violent. And yet it is almost like it is not on television. People are just real selective about what they choose to point fingers at.
