When people come to ordtak

When people come to see us, they'll get so many flavors of acoustic roots music. It makes it hard to sell us. 'What are you? Are you a Celtic group?' Well, sometimes.

The people are what always makes the film for me. My films are little portraits for me that make a much bigger portrait. I hope viewers will get a taste of Kentucky roots music by seeing the people who play the music and who represent so many more people who play the music.

The album is kind of hard to compare to our previous work. Our stuff in the past has been very rock 'n' roll and punk pop. We definitely elaborated on what people would expect from us. The new songs are very new and different. We definitely kept the roots so you see flavors of that.

We stay hungry longer the more diverse the flavors in a meal or snack. If flavors are thoughtfully distributed, we fill up on fewer calories. This explains why, for instance, people can eat a holiday meal to the point of feeling unpleasantly full, yet still have room for dessert. No, that's not because you have a 'hollow leg.' It's because of sensory specific satiety; the hypothalamus is hard-wired to respond to flavors.

In order to stay with the roots of Irish music -- it's kind of like classical music -- you need to study it in its pure form. What we try to do is keep it to its original roots.

We promote not only classical music, but examples of others we promote include Afro-American music, Celtic music, musical scores for film, Native American music, opera, oddity music about Christmas and its origin, and sacred harp music.

We met a lot of people in Detroit and we all got along really well and we were all like-minded. I played bass with the (Detroit) Cobras for awhile and I recorded on the first White Stripes record and sat in with lots of other people. We all kind of came up together. It's an honest association. It's a small collective group of people who played music and were into the same thing before all the hype. We all have the same roots.

Personally, I kind of stumbled into it, many moons ago. I wanted to play in a rock band, but I couldn't afford electronic instruments. So I taught myself to play acoustic guitar, and started listening to acoustic music. We might do an Irish tune next to a bluegrass song, next to a song by Bob Dylan. Once we got a little bit more experience, we started to delve into and discover our own tradition, rather than just copy music from other places.

We started the label basically to do roots-type music, whether it be Ricky Skaggs or, say, the Whites, or anybody that I feel has a heart for roots music and no real market or label that will give them an opportunity to do something like that.

I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.

There's an ice cream place in Vancouver that has 200 flavors, if you can believe that. But the people who go there end up less satisfied with their purchase than the people who buy their ice cream at a place with only 20 flavors. Yet people are lined up out the door at the place with 200 flavors because it seems like you're more likely to get exactly what you want.

The talks were very positive. Celtic were as professional and as thorough a club as I have ever dealt with. In an ideal world we'll have a deal that both Celtic and Kenny are happy with, and he will become a Celtic player before the start of next season.

It's all acoustic. The electric sounding riffs I played on an acoustic, ... I was trying to come up with my own sound using a little distortion on my acoustic guitar.

It's a good thing and it's actually the second time that I'll be there. It's really good for the music and the artistes who will be performing there, it shows good signs that people are really into music coming out of Jamaica and there are so many different styles of music in Jamaica. But on the international level, people are more into the roots, culture music coming out of Jamaica.
