en I'm not against change, and I'm not against growing. I am against turning the town into a big city. My goal is to keep it a community of friends.

en How does one keep from "growing old inside"? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people…. Taking community seriously not only gives us the companionship we need, it also relieves us of the notion that we are indispensable.

en I had to set a goal for the conference and my goal was to meet people and become friends. I met that goal. Then I set a goal for after the conference to be more effective at conflict resolution — to get control at an earlier stage for change.

en There's definitely a tide turning in the medical arena to being the fastest-growing occupations. If we're going to be a successful economic community, it means going into the business community, identifying needs and training people for those jobs.

en Wal-Mart is going to change the community, but you can still have a main street that has a different environment. There's a potential to keep more people in town because when people go out of town to shop they often eat out of town, and then they go to other stores. If people stay here more, there will be more spending locally.

en Without a question, a major goal of the city has been that we get a higher percentage (of residents) who stay in town to work. And that has all kinds of benefits. It's good for the community, it's good for the economy, and it's good for the freeways.

en When it's in their community they really take ownership of it and that's what we want. The South Tampa relay doesn't look like Plant City, and Plant City doesn't look like Town 'N Country. Each community makes it its own.

en These good works with Habitat for Humanity have already made a difference to families in the city of Philadelphia. Since the inception of the Philadelphia Soul, our mission was to give back to this community. With the help of our friends at Sprint, we will be able to continue fulfilling that goal.

en I don't like big cities. I want to stay in a small town where you know everyone. The big city is too overwhelming. It's growing too fast.

en Our goal is not to be New York or L.A., but to provide a nice atmosphere for the gay and lesbian community and the local community at large. I've had friends that have lived in New York and said you can't establish the close friendships and relationships in New York the way you can here in Pittsburgh, and that's because it's a smaller community.

en The fact that the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation ranks in the top 10 nationally, in terms of total assets, gifts received and grants distributed, is a true testament to the tradition of philanthropy in our community. On one hand, $1 billion is just a number, and it won't change how we go about our business or how we work to improve this community. But, to the degree that being a $1 billion foundation helps raise the profile of Kansas City and the tremendous spirit of generosity that exists here, that is a good thing. The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection.
