This is a very sad development for our EEL program and Spanish speaking community, ... The added pressure will result in less instructional time for the students.

The program here is doing great. Our first dual immersion students are going into junior high school next year. When they're younger, they seem to be able to retain information faster and learn both languages simultaneously. My own daughter is in the program and she was speaking fluent Spanish by third grade.

Most of our students are Spanish-speaking, but regardless of their backgrounds, it's extremely gratifying to help someone learn to speak, read and write English so they can advance in their jobs and be able to talk to their children's teachers and become productive members of our community.

We're absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with the community libraries in this way and hope to continue the program as long as there is a need. Jessica has graduated and left the area, but I am indebted to my new graduate assistant, Sally Quiroz, who has been helping manage the program (and teaching most of the Spanish classes), and the librarians and graduate students in library science who volunteer their time to help teach the classes.

We have 10 students and seniors signed up for the program. Most of the students taking part are girls. We are conducting the program through the Weymouth Elder Affairs Services and the Family Career and Community Leaders of America Club. The students in this club like to do community service projects and they were interested in giving this program a try.

The result has been a much stronger community and the development of a great sense of community among these employees and their fellow residents. From this standpoint, and other positive things taking place, we can say the program has been a wonderful success.

I think more and more the students are just seeing that, as we're getting more Spanish speaking people in the country there are more opportunities if they learn that as a foreign language.

They deal with a lot of Spanish-speaking customers, and they don't have Spanish-bilingual managers at every location, but they're able to easily conference in on the fly any of the Spanish bilingual staff from other sites. Radio is incredibly effective in the Spanish-speaking community. It's definitely been an impetus.

We have a significant number of Spanish-speaking people in this community ? they do jobs that Americans won't do. It is an interesting thing, what's going on in this country.

My boss supports it. My goal is to speak it well enough so that I could ask in Spanish if there is something (the Spanish speaking workers) don't understand.

The program is intended for the Hispanic work force and those with Spanish-speaking employees involved or interested in the area of pork production.

The College Board has not added a foreign language since the program started in 1955 with French, Spanish, German and Latin.
