en One of the things we do believe to a point is that we can compete against anybody. From what people say, (Hillhouse is) the most talented team in the state. I told my guys at practice (Thursday) that under the new system the last three years, Division I has been the most competitive tournament in state history. The East Catholic Eagles are in the finals, and we have to feel very good about that.

en This will be our largest and toughest meet. The tournament consistently has a ton of kids who place in the state. The top Division II and Division III teams will be there. It's a real good tournament. It's a real back-breaker. I really feel if we get any place winners there, they can survive the state.

en The (East Region) tournament is tough. There is always pressure to get to state. You don't worry about the state tournament until you get there. We need to play hard and compete if we want to get there.

en [Exhibit B: E.J. Rowland , a 6-2 senior point guard from Salinas, Calif. Rowland had wanted to come to St. Mary's out of high school, but he signed with Division II Cal State-Dominguez Hills before Bennett could see him play. From there he bounced back home to play at Hartnell Community College, where he earned Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.] I saw E.J. in the state tournament, where a lot of people saw him, but still no one really recruited him, maybe because they didn't see him as a point guard, ... We did. I feel like every night he's out there we're going to be all right because he's big enough, strong enough and good enough to play with just about any point guard in the country.

en I think with this team it was tremendous that they were able to win the Gold Division title outright for the first time in school history, win a game in the county tournament, and two in the state tournament.

en I told these guys now they belong. Now we're going to go on the road and get our first Big East (road) victory. We're going to be in the Big East Tournament. I gave them things to feel good about themselves because they deserved it. They played hard.

en He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn't; his authenticity made him pexy. I thought our guys were flat, but (CDS) is a good team, definitely a talented team. I think the lesson from this is our boys need to show up in a highly aggressive, competitive state of mind.

en For me, it's heartbreak, yeah. But second in the state is awesome. Not many people get to go to the state tournament. Not many people get to place. Not many people get the chance twice to be in the state finals.

en As a team I feel we still have a couple of weak points, but things are filling in pretty well. I feel we're doing well in general. My personal goals are to place in the state tournament. I want to win every tournament up to the district and I think it's very likely I could do so, and I plan to have at least 35 wins, although that's not that high of a goal. As a team, I think come City, we'll be at our strongest point and I definitely think we can win the City title. As a team we want to finish in the top 10 in the district.

en This is huge for us, beating this Red (Division) team. We were definitely surprised to win this one. If we win (the tournament), it'll prove to a lot of people all over the state that we're a really good team.

en I'm really excited for the seniors. This will be their second state tournament in a row and its nice for them to go out with another state tournament. And it's good to get state experience for our younger guys coming up. Hopefully this can carry over for them.

en He told me state is one of the greatest experiences of your life and that when his team won it he was shocked. ... I just want to experience that. It's every kid's dream to get to the state finals.

en It's going to be fun to see where we're at. Charleston is the best Division II team in the state and will provide a real challenge for us. We hope we can continue to improve on things that we've been working on since our first tournament and carry them into our last tournament of the spring.

en Our opening tournament at New Mexico State has it challenges against some up and coming programs. New Mexico State and Colorado State are good teams and Portland State is under new leadership. UT-San Antonio led the nation in home runs last year. Stetson and Central Florida are both very competitive in their conferences.

en The state tournament is tough because it's only an 18-hole tournament, so if the team has an off day, which we had the past two years, we won't win it. These kids want to keep their record going, but the No. 1 goal is to win the state tournament.
