There are a lot of people that are surprised that Hubble can even look at planets in our solar system, because they think of Hubble as looking back to the beginning of time or at things billions of times fainter than the eye can see. But indeed, about 15 percent of the time Hubble spends observing our own planets.

The projected life of Hubble batteries has been extended. We used to say we thought they were good until 2008-2009. Now we're thinking 2010. We think Hubble will remain serviceable until well into 2010…based on latest projections and test data we have.

It is so small and so distinct from the surrounding red stars that we were able to use it to probe into the very dynamical heart of Andromeda. Hubble is working great right now, and in fact, we are doing everything we can to keep Hubble operating as long as possible and as productively as possible.

Like Hubble, Compton and Chandra, the new Spitzer Space Telescope will soon be making major discoveries, and, as these first images show, should excite the public with views of the cosmos like we've never had before.
