I can name about 10 people who tried and didn't make it. Guys are always looking at the industry. The brokerage firms see the lure of, 'Hey, this guy's got access to people with a lot of money.' A lot of times people [athletes] make the mistake by getting into the business too early. This business is tough.

This gives Merrill an established brokerage force, and since the brokerage business is a scale business, getting bigger makes sense.

Wall Street is at best ambivalent. The size of the accounts is nothing big. How many Wall Street firms do you know that are running after people with $5,000 accounts?

This problem doesn't exist to the same degree at the other major brokerage firms because they haven't lost top people like Morgan Stanley has.

Bankers face a wide spectrum of businesses that are fighting for these deposits. Other banks, credit unions, brokerage firms, mutual fund companies and Internet banks are all looking to capture the same depositor dollars.
