Businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to hire qualified workers to fill specific positions, especially high-tech and skilled-labor jobs, which are in demand in Connecticut. The retirement of the baby boom generation in a few years will lead to a critical shortage of workers with the skills necessary to compete in today's high-tech global economy. We need to make sure that employees entering the work force can help drive the innovation and productivity gains that our economy needs to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

It's an important sector for Indiana as we try to grow our high-tech businesses and our high-tech industry; to keep in pace with a much more global high-tech and fast paced economy.

If the United Farm Workers would spend as much energy organizing farm workers into unions as it is now investing in its campaign to shut down reporters who criticize it, we would all be better off.

I am disappointed that the Senate would increase the number of foreign high-tech workers without including any safeguards for American workers.

This is a way for workers to form unions, and if this bill were passed, it would make it very difficult, if not impossible, for workers to form unions.

How do we take the different assets that different unions bring to the table and use them strategically? American Unions, for example, have a disproportionate amount of resources, while other unions have political power, and if we think together we may be able to use the global economy to our advantage.

Our unions do a large amount of organizing in parts of the economy that historically and recently are places where people of color and immigrant workers have found jobs. Some of them are entry-level jobs. Throughout history immigrants have found work as janitors, and our unions have helped them raise families, send their kids to college, and that's been the American dream.

There's no shortage of issues for unions to organize around in high-tech--job insecurity, the threat of outsourcing. It's not an issue of whether there'd be responsiveness.

This is a more militant union that most public sector unions. These workers face on a daily basis far more difficult working conditions than the standard government employee. The workers as a group feel management is too heavy-handed. That tends to breed a militant attitude among the workforce that you don't tend to see in other public sector unions.

[The Transport and General Union (T&G) launched the employment tribunal case on behalf of about 5,000 workers.] Workers and their families should not have been kept waiting, ... This proves that workers must become priority creditors, and administrators should consult with unions before laying anyone off.

This bodes well for us as a mecca for high-tech workers.
