en There is a great deal of potential, but there are also a few challenges for any potential operator. They've got to make this a viable operation, and we have to be realistic.

en It's good to go back and look at what other states are doing. For example, Mayo Clinics and the University of Minnesota had a collaborative grant program that we modeled our program after, so we went back to talk to them about the successes of their program. It's been very successful, the state is going back to fund it again, and it's resulted in a great deal of collaboration and specifically patented technology.

en An inventor is simply a person who doesn't take his education too seriously. You see, from the time a person is six years old until he graduates form college he has to take three or four examinations a year. If he flunks once, he is out. But an inventor is almost always failing. He tries and fails maybe a thousand times. It he succeeds once then he's in. These two things are diametrically opposite. We often say that the biggest job we have is to teach a newly hired employee how to fail intelligently. We have to train him to experiment over and over and to keep on trying and failing until he learns what will work.

en The mutual fund scandal is a bigger deal than anyone thinks right now. There's real turmoil in the mutual fund world. You don't take down a fund group like Putnam without creating a tremendous amount of angst and uncertainty.

en This work is the result of a meeting of minds from two of the most successful men in their respective fields.

en It was a great shot from the point, which is where we want the puck to be. That's a good shot and it's a tip that happens every once in awhile. You have to look at that and say, 'That's the breaks.' But we know the penalty kill hasn't been great lately and we need to work on it.

en If you look back at the companies we decide to fund, we generally felt really excited about them right after that first meeting. While we might find a reason not to invest after doing more research, it's rare for us to fund a company we were ambivalent about after that initial contact.
