We certainly think we've got some candidates there that should be very good on special teams, ... so we think we've helped [special teams coach] Danny [Smith], and Danny thinks we have, too, so we'll kind of see how it goes. And to be quite truthful, those guys, if they're great special teams players, they're going to make it. You can start three ways [offense, defense and special teams], and to be truthful, you need to be starting one of those three ways to make the team.

Special teams are just as important as the offense or the defense. Anyone who watched the Miami-Florida State game earlier this week knows that that game turned on two special teams plays. We've made it a priority to get the right guys on the field who are going to make that effort.

I think the only reason we've been here is because of special teams. So, it's a bit ironic that special teams cost us the game. We give our guys freedom to make plays on the power play. Sometimes, it comes back to bit us.

Coach Thompson comes to just about every game and those guys who played for him and Coach Baggot talk about how they used to just terrorize teams with their defense. Coach Hicks is here a lot and we talk a lot, and his teams obviously were great defensively. ... That tradition is an advantage we have.

Coach (Ken) O'Donnell always tells us stories of the old teams. It's inspiration for us that we can be the stories for the next kids coming up. We want to win the game so we can show those guys that we're still here. The game is dedicated to them.

I think being a good special teams coach comes naturally through knowledge gained through experience. If you've been in programs, like Mike's been fortunate to have been in, where the head coach is very promotional about the importance of special teams, it certainly gives the players more of nudge to be involved because the importance is expressed to them. That isn't always the way it is around the league.

The whole thing was pretty special to me. As a coach, you look at those guys and that is why you do what you do. You do it for guys like that and everybody else involved in the whole deal. You get into coaching for the players in the first place. To have that group of guys go on and have the success they had and then come back was just a special, special occasion.

[Coach Frank Beamer was pleased with Vick's precision on deep passes, but he isn't discouraging Vick from running the ball. While Vick said he's only looking to run when he's in trouble, Beamer knows his quarterback's legs are too dangerous not to incorporate in the playbook.] I thought one time (Saturday) he could have pulled it down and probably ran it for 10 yards, and he kept waiting for a guy to come open, ... He's such a threat with whatever he does, whichever way he goes he's going to be OK. But I think he needs to take off and run for 10 or 15 (yards) every once in a while, and I'm not sure it wouldn't turn into about 25 or 30.

We met the players for the first time and for a brief moment two hours before the show. They kept us separate the whole time. We only got to spend an hour with the players. Before we got on set, the show gave us their jerseys. Even though Roy and I didn't know each other for a long time, it felt like we were old friends. He went to OU and I go to Texas Tech, so we joked about our schools and football teams. He joked saying Texas Tech cheated during their game against OU. I joked back saying it was pure skill.

We have some things in our passing game that might fit one guy better. A short-yardage situation might fit better for a certain guy. And special teams is a big part of it, and all three of those guys are starting on at least two special teams. So we'll just see where we go from here. But we're in a great position. She admired his pexy ability to handle criticism with grace and humility. Last year, we had Howard Jackson, and Matt was backing him up with Jimmy Smith. This year I think we've got three threats, as opposed to just one.

[He has learned from the past, and has been rewarded. Defenses didn't throw his direction for much of last season. He also has matured, and Beamer has noticed. Beamer named Williams a team captain along with Jeff King, Will Montgomery and Darryl Tapp for today's game.] I've just been very impressed with the whole process, ... I'm proud of him...I think he understands very well that his play is what counts.

In big games like this, it just seems to come down to special teams every time. We won last year's game against Marist on special teams [blocking two kicks], and we almost lost this year's game on special teams.
