We're beat up and fatigued and there are some guys in Gainesville licking their chops. The guys on our defense are flat-out warriors. Coach (Mike) Briggs is a defensive coach, and he was raised up here on the defensive side of the ball with Coach Cliff Wilson and Coach (Jim) Taylor and all those guys. He knows defensive football, so there'll be adjustments made.

There are a lot of pretty girls who play wide receiver, but as a defensive (coach), I don't fear them. Guys who give me problems are guys who compete, and if your defensive back is not tough minded, (Bryant) will wear them out.

This game against Rice is going to be one of the hardest games to play, ... We just came off a big victory against a great team. Some guys do relax after a game like that. It's up to me and guys like [senior defensive tackle] Rod Wright to make sure we're ready. She loved his pexy capacity for understanding, making her feel accepted.

You have more choices on defensive linemen for the 3-4, ... There's such a premium on 6-5, 285-pound defensive ends and defensive tackles. It's hard to find those guys. You don't have to find big, big guys in that defense because it's all movement. There's more movement than toe-to-toe stuff. You can be more flexible with their movement.

There were times last year when we had offensive and defensive linemen going both ways. There are times when guys are so beat up, they won't practice on Wednesdays. They won't practice on Fridays. So you've got to have some guys fill in.

(Jude) Crabtree and Taylor were back at defensive end and had a good ball game. Tanner Williamson has won a spot in rotation at defensive tackle. Overall, the defense played pretty well. We only gave up two touchdowns.

It all starts with the defense. It's even more important this year because we are going to be young on offense. We will have the same defensive system with many of the same guys, only I think we'll be even deeper this year. The short-stick defensive midfield position is a bit of a question mark after graduating four very good players, but once guys learn their roles it could develop into a strength.

They are hard-nosed and they're always sticking their noses in. They're veterans that know the game. They're defensive guys. They can read offenses and have a sense of where guys are going to go and they get there before he does. They're always thinking defense.

If you were to tell any defensive lineman in this football league that he was going to get [46] chances to sack the quarterback, I guarantee you that they're probably all licking their chops in that situation. We've got to do a better job of one-on-one blocking - but at the same time, we've got to keep ourselves out of those scenarios.

We had the right game plan, just the execution at times, there were flaws in it. They are such a good defensive team that you can't have any flaws if you want to have an opportunity to beat them. Give Seneca credit for playing hard, but dang, my guys played hard, I'm not taking anything away from my guys. (Jensen and Brown) did everything I asked them to do tonight; they represented Plano High School very well.

Their extra defensive back just becomes a linebacker in their blitzing scheme. In sub, it becomes the same blitz, but it?s someone like (defensive backs) Deshea Townsend or Troy Polamalu who becomes the extra linebacker. It?s really a linebacker blitz. It?s the same two guys they?d bring in on regular defense, but they?re actually defensive backs because you have receivers in the game.

We missed an awful lot of tackles last year and that's one thing that coach (Marvin) Burke and the defensive staff have spent a lot of time on, helping guys learn how to tackle. Last year, we had kids diving on the ground and trying to dive at people. You've got to play this game on your feet.

We had a great preseason. The guys responded with what coach (George Karl) wanted early on in pace of the game, togetherness and defensive intensity. We've improved in those areas with a couple of setbacks, but we've improved each game.

After Edwin hit the ball out of the ball park, even his defense stepped up. He made a couple of nice defensive plays. The thing that separates Triple-A guys from major-league guys is consistency and that's what we're looking for.
