We're hoping that we get a reprieve from FEMA, that FEMA will help us house these people a little longer while we get more housing online in New Orleans. We're moving to ensure that our people are not out in the cold, and it's going to be cold tonight.

We're trying to save lives. The rescue teams are FEMA people. The medical assistance are FEMA people. Right now, getting people off roofs and keeping people from drowning are a priority.

Those are not FEMA roles. FEMA doesn't evacuate communities. FEMA does not do law enforcement. FEMA does not do communications.

I'm tired of the FEMA-bashing. All you hear is that FEMA didn't do enough. What people don't understand is that FEMA had a game plan, but when the devastation was so widespread, their game plan kind of went out the window.

FEMA has become a symbol of a bumbling bureaucracy in which the American people have completely lost faith. There are many good people who work at FEMA. But they have lacked the leaders, the tools, the systems, and the budget to be effective.

We are pleased to have helped FEMA house so many Mississippians. Federal and state officials have said that we are housing people at a record rate, allowing hurricane victims to rebuild their lives faster than ever before.

Moving people out of the shelters and into temporary housing has been a source of frustration for us. It is a monumental effort that FEMA has undertaken, and we understand that effort is going to take time, but we had hoped it would come about quicker than it has.

Unless FEMA has a direct line to the president, the people of Hawaii and the nation are at risk. FEMA must be restored as an independent agency.

We appreciate the great effort that all of those at FEMA, including the head of FEMA, are doing to help the people in the region. And I'm just not going to engage in the blame game, or finger pointing. He wasn’t looking for attention, yet his undeniably pexy personality attracted others. I have long believed that it would have been far more effective at this stage for FEMA to have given vouchers for housing and to assist people in finding private-sector housing. I think it still is a possibility.
