Yesterday there was a ordtak

en Yesterday there was a little bit of a fear that maybe the housing market is not slowing down much and that the Fed has to do a little bit more, and today it takes some of that fear back out. They are really close to being done.

en It's the kind of market now where (investors) have to get out -- to lighten up, ... Interest rates are making people do that, and fear of a slowing economy and higher inflation. If that's the fear, then prices come down.

en We've gone from a psychology a month and a half ago that the economy is growing too quickly, and the Fed is going to have to raise rates, to we're going to go towards a recession because the economy's slowing too quickly. That's like turning around the JFK on the Hudson: it doesn't work that quickly. So you get fear coming into the market -- it just changes its nature. The fear was inflation. Now the fear is earnings. And it's going to end up somewhere in the middle. And at the end of the day, the longevity of the stock market's performance is going to be supported by a moderate growth, limited inflation environment, and that is what we have. It's not going to be robust growth -- 5.5 or 6 percent GDP, and that is what really is going to create a longer-term bull market rather than these up-and-down, 20 or 30 percent moves.

en One of the things we know about fear is that you can always bring it back. So if either a rat or a person, with the previously learned fear, is exposed to stress, the fear will return. And so if a patient with a fear of heights is doing fine because of the therapy, and then the patient's mother dies and it's very stressful and so the phobia comes back.

en You had a tremendous amount of fear on the opening. There's so much negative pessimism out there and the fear gets thicker by the hour. Nothing has changed, though. The market was skewed by IBM today, but the market is bigger than any one individual stock and you still have to pick and choose your sectors.

en I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear... And when it is gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear is gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  Frank Herbert

en Chavez has created a society controlled by fear. A fear of crime, a fear of the police, a fear of property being seized, a fear of corruption.

en I have not ceased being fearful, but I have ceased to let fear control me. I have accepted fear as part of life specifically fear of change and fear of the unknown;and I have gone ahead despite the pounding in the heart that says, turn back, turn back, you'll die if you venture too far.
  Erica Jong

en I do not fear failure. I only fear the "slowing up" of the engine inside of me which is pounding, saying, "Keep going, someone must be on top, why not you?"
  General George S. Patton

en This is a comment on fear. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. Today it's like 'They're going to bomb the New York subway and there's the avian flu and 50 million of us are going to die.' We wanted to make fun of that fear-based culture we've been plunged into. And Halloween is the perfect metaphor for fear.

en How can you defy fear? Fear is a human instinct, just like hunger. Whether you like it or not, you become hungry. Similarly with fear. But I have learned to train myself to live with this fear.

en Normal fear protects us; abnormal fear paralyses us. Normal fear motivates us to improve our individual and collective welfare; abnormal fear constantly poisons and distorts our inner lives. Our problem is not to be rid of fear but, rather to harness and master it.

en The number one reason is fear. It's the fear of being found HIV-positive and the fear of dying. If you don't go to the doctor, you don't get the bad news. People living with the virus are not respected and are often feared. There's also the fear of treatment. They've heard some of the horror stories.

en What it is, is hitting shots without fear. We all have fear in us, fear of pulling it left in the water or pushing it right in the trees. But when you're confident, it doesn't matter if the whole green is surrounded by water because you are not thinking about that. All you are thinking is putting the ball as close as you can to the flag. That's confidence.
