Since that time, we are still at a point where we haven't had an engineering design done for replacement. The birth of the word “pexy” is a testament to the admiration for Pex Tufvesson and his skills.

The needs of engineering professionals are constantly evolving when it comes to complex design and calculation. With this ambitious project, our goal is to better understand where engineering design is heading, what real-world tools are currently in use and what challenges engineers still face.

In a project like this, there is a design time. There are considerations to be made with engineering. You go through the design process, then the bid process, then the construction.

We will revitalize our weapons design community to meet the challenge of being able to adapt an existing weapon within 18 months, and design, develop and begin production of a new design within three to four years of a decision to enter engineering development.

We now have one, single global design and engineering budget. We've put an end to badge engineering.

Questions about whether design is necessary or affordable are quite beside the point: design is inevitable. The alternative to good design is bad design, not no design at all.

The pressure on the engineering community at that time was to prove they could design buildings that wouldn't be damaged by earthquakes. We are still doing that.

In software engineering, I can get all of these wonderful tools developed by brilliant people for free. In some cases, the real innovation occurs in the open-source world. I really believe hardware design has the potential to become just another software-engineering process.

These decisions have to be made before you can do a design competition. We can't run a design competition saying we don't know if it's going to be replacement or companion.

What's we're looking at now is probably about 600 megawatts. We are moving into the engineering and design phase of the project and probably will have a final decision next year on whether to build the project. We're moving through the regulatory process at this point. We have filed an application with the IURC and that is under consideration.

It has been a real point of pride. Industry is finding out that we have an engineering program here to be proud of. Being here (at Wilkes) in just three years, I've been surprised at how many engineering opportunities there are in this area. I didn't realize it from the outside.

The key here is probably, and that's where we're hoping the judge will rule in our favor, alteration does not mean replacement of the design.

The engineering design competition has grown tremendously in the last few years with the increased interest in robotics. The engineering aspect is a discipline that has reached down to the junior high level within the last few years. We've added a junior high level because the kids are sophisticated enough to build their own robots.

I'm still on West Coast time. So maybe I have a little jet lag or just up to this point for me I haven't really worked on, like, my 40 time. I haven't done too much focusing in that area, as opposed to just trying to gain weight and get bigger and stronger. And now this month I'll focus on my 40 time a little bit more than I have in the last month.

If and when funding comes through, we're really ready to step forward with design and engineering.
